Are there any rules?
« on August 19, 2010, 12:25:11 pm by ravenrover »
With the proposed move of Bellamy to Cardiff up in the air, perhaps a time for thought and reflection. Are there any rules regarding loan players ie number of loanees, number from 1 individual club, percentage of the players wages the loan club have to pay?
My worry, and I expressed it on a different post is that Championship teams, or 1st and 2nd Div for that matter, could become the resrve teams of the Premier league clubs now that the squads are being limited. For example Preston, with the Fergie connection, could become Man Utd's 2nd team for the players who don't make the 1st team squad as could any team other team with a large Premier team in the locality. Think about the London teams who could pick up several players from Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea on loan. Take the Man City situation they buy all these world class players and can only pick the squad limit. Do they then loan out the ones who dont make the squad such as Bellamy, players playing in the lower leagues being payed thousands of pounds by the parent club,to teams who couldn't afford to pay one weeks wages never mind a months wages.
Hope I'm wrong but is the new squad system in the Premier going to cause problems in the lower leagues?

I was always lead to believe that the club who was loaning the player had to pay a minimum of 50% of the wages. It seems that's not the case with the Bellamy deal.

I think you can only have 5 loan players in your matchday squad. There are also other rules around lengths of loan.

Why does it cause problems ? There are limits to the number of loan players that can take the field in any one game, and there may be restrictions on the number of loans per season.

So why shouldn't clubs exploit the loan system for their own advantage ?

It's not true to say that London clubs will have exclusivity to players from London Premiership teams. We have had, Mason from Spurs, JET from Arsenal, Worley from Chelsea, Mills from Man City, Stock from Preston, the list goes on. Leeds are reported to be taking Henry Lansbury from Arsenal, Watford had Cleverley from Man U.

Plus, does it matter how these are funded as long as clubs are operating within their means. I think the Football League however should be ensuring that fees are paid before other deals are done.

As in the Cardiff case their transfer embargo should not have been lifted until Motherwell got their money, plus the other clubs who Cardiff are reported to owe.

It should be the same for any club. If they default on any payment, whether that be to the tax man or another club, then a transfer embargo should be imposed until that debt is paid.

i agree with you 100%. The trouble is though if the league adopted that ruling then almost every club would have a transfer embargo.

I don't think I said that London clubs will have exclusivity, it could apply to any club outside of the Premiership. Quite rightly you make a point about players being loaned all over the place but the examples you state are for one off players. I am talking about several players from a big club being loaned to the same lower league club. I am sure the preimer club would not wish to let \"major star\" players go on loan to other premier teams so as a for instance assuming these don't make  the squad what would be there to stop Bury or any other team even DRFC loaning Bridge,Johnson,Santa Cruze,Wright-Philips and Jo and City continuing to pay their wages or the bulk of it. You make the point about if the clubs are operating within thier means I can't think of any club outside the premiership being able to afford one such player ie Cardiff - Bellemy never mind several. It's far fetched I know but stranger things have happened.
The point I am trying to make, perhaps badly, is could the Premier teams play a major part in other leagues in both promotion and relegation by loaning out several star players, for match fitness purposes, to the same team be it for a season long loan or just 3-6months, and could these lower league teams pay say 4 or 5 of them at the same time?

It is a worry. My understanding, which might be wrong in this day and age, is that the club taking the loan player has to pay all the wages of the on loan player upto the amount earned by the highest paid registered player at the receiving club. Wages above that are met by the loaning club. So, if that's still true, it would mean that clubs would be paying out quite a wedge in their own terms for their star loanees even if taht wedge isn't much in the scale of Prem wages.

On the FA \"H Form\" you have to declare who will pay the players wages, what the basic wage is per week and other financial provisions.

if you remember a few years ago, warnock loaned rotherham players free of charge and utd paid the wages, so i cant imagine there is now some rule to say the loaning club must pay £X...
