Sunday League Football - sad news
« on August 22, 2010, 10:42:45 pm by NathanDRFC »
It is with sadness that I have to report the death of Alf Storey. Alf was a popular referee in the Sunday League circuit, and I am sure you all have your own memories about him.

He was a legend, he would always say before a game \"keep it clean lads i don't want to show any cards\" and \"if you go down in the box make sure it's a good dive\", he will be surly missed.

Very sad. Alf was a lovely bloke.

I remember back in my playing days we got hammered about 8-0 in the cup, and after the game Alf came over and said, \"Unlucky lads, I was hoping you'd get in their area so I could give you a penalty\"! Cheeky sod!

RIP Alf.

Sad news that.

I'll never forget the way he vitually gave you a running commentary all the way through the game \"He fouled you but you've still got the ball so carry on\" \"That was unlucky son, better luck next time\"

RIP Alf

Very sad news indeed.

The lads loved it when they discovered he was our referee. I'm sure that eveybody who has played in the Donny Sunday League has fond memories of him.  A great bloke and local football will certainly be worse off without him.

RIP Alf.

I remember the first time he ref'd us, he looked about 101 then and we all thought that he would spoil the match because he wouldn't be able to keep up with play and would probably make some horrendous decisions.
It turned out to be one of the best games to play in as he was bang on the button, everyone had loads of respect for him so there wasn't any gobbing off.

Someone above mentioned his running comentaries and I recall him shouting \"Go on lad\" everytime someone was near goal or was running with the ball at their feet.

Lovely, lovely man.

RIP Alf

everyone who played football on a Sunday would enjoy the game with alf referring. what made me laugh was when someone did a late crunching tackle he would say just a touch late but he went for the ball, and then severely bollox someone for swearing, but enjoyed his running commentary of the game top bloke.

RIP Alf!!

Legend of a referee!

Two great memories,

A school match, you were playing nudga, and i sprayed a great ball wide, to which Alf commented whilst running past me ' good ball lad, but dont admire it, get in the box'!!

And the 2nd, was playing for Arskey Plough

Im playing centre back, 1-1 with 2 mins to go. centre forward through on goal, and i take the man, and some of the ball! Everyone up for penalty!! Its a foul ref, penalty,  'Not it isnt, get yourself up and play on. The fat lad got a piece of the ball'!!! Cheers Alf!

This is a very sad day. Alf was one of the few guys that made all of the petty squabbles in Sunday football worth bothering with.
Muttley mentioned the running commentary and as we played in the same team for a very, very long time (Little Plough) we will have heard the same ones.
He always wanted every game to be a draw and if you were one nil down near the end he always gave you the chance to equalise.
Let's not forget his great tan. David Dickinson would have been well jealous.

When i used to confirm where we were playing to him before a game i'd be on the phone for hours but it never bothered me.

When and where is the funeral?
