First season with Mills. We (the defence) were spoilt the first season with our formation, as we did not concede many. You need to consider that we played 5 in midfield and totally protected the back 4. Don't take my word for it, even Sean stated the same, as it was out first season in the CCC and he wanted to protect as he didn't know how hard it would be or how good we were. That first season was total consolidation and do not concede. The trouble was we were not scoring and had to score goals, else we would have gone down

what i'd like to know is what the magic formula/reason/strategy was that change us from THAT team, to the team that would have won the league if it started on boxing day....from that day we were scoring, and we weren't conceding many.

Fact is fellas, ignoring selective stats (we can all provide them to make a case), Sharp is a far superior player to Heffs imo.
I only have to look at his effort , the fear in the opposition and his goals to see this. Incidentally, Irvine seems to think that sadly Heffs is not the player he once was ; he can no longer make the team for a Div.1 team ffs.
Why is it, when we lose a game that, we drop into the inevitable 'bring back Heffs' campaigns from certain individuals on this board.
Christ I would want to bring back Kitch or Big Bren if I had a choice, they would have a field day feeding off our current midfield. We have what we have and strangely 'by and large' ..........it's very good.

Heffernan was good enough at this level. He proved it by having a better goals to game ratio than Sharp in our first season back at this level.

Oh please, no.

Stick to the off topic and continue telling us your life of woe's mate

I think we all would. It might settle a few arguments on here.

Some will just say Heffs alone changed our season by banging the goals in. What needs pointing out is that Heffs played in the 2 matches prior to our turn around and looked in-effective. IMO Heffs may always be in-effective without a support link player. He got Copps and a cracking midfield and a cracking system in place that was made for him or any striker. For a short period Heffs was awesome (something I'm not averse to saying), but Heffs couldn't adapt his game when all wasn't running smoothly on the pitch. Don't get me wrong he will always bang goals in, if he gets in where he wants it. It was when Heffs was alone up front, which happens a lot under Seans teams.....he, IMO was unable to hold the ball up, battle or win headers (not strong enough), able to run the channels to give us an outlet (not quick enough or more importantly fit enough over 90 mins).

I prefer the fact that we introduced a work-horse, no nonsense, good footballing, extremely athletic midfield of Spicer, Stock, Wellens, Woods with Copps tucked in front. This lot protected the back 4 and by this got very good support by the back 4 esp the 2 full backs. This lot also supplied the ammo to the forward and more importantly supported him in the box. This forward was Heffs, I'm not sure if Hayter was injured at this time, as it would have been him and I'm confident the outcome would have been the same.
As I said, I call it tweaks in the system rather than an individual. IMO Sean does not have individuals and it's all about 11 players on the pitch. The tweak was in the midfield and the all important role of Copps.
