Great Praise for the club.
« on March 28, 2011, 09:16:36 am by DRFC-PERKINS »
At a time when people are debating about season tickets/and avoiding relagation (which we will), i'd like to make a point that my little brother brought to my attention. As a new season ticket holder, which he joined me my dad and grandad last season at the age of 9 and is now in his last year of school. In a nut shell he said that the number of kids at his school who had taken up a interest in rovers over the last two years has atleast trebled at his school. With  more going to games, and buying rovers shirts ect. He also said he was gonna write to JR and thank him for the involvement Rovers have with his school, the enjoyment of the activities as well as the standard being top class. So a hell of a lot of praise for the scheme, even at the early days you can slowly see the prgression of getting new fans in, as well as giving back to the community

Building a larger fan base is always going to be a long term plan, the kids that are going now will no doubt wean their own kids into the Rovers family, larger fan bases don`t happen overnight, it has to be a long term effort!

Maybe we could devise a breeding plan for the kids of today for the time when they are old enough to become parents, a super race of Rovers fans!

............great to hear this. i have brought my kids up to 'keep the faith' and even converted my wife, despite living 97 miles away

but the real future is closer at home, and its good to see this young support building. very noticeable v QPR.

back in my day at Donny Grammar in the 70s you could count Rovers fans on your fingers, despite 300 kids being there.

i know this as we were the ones in who bunked off to watch the Rovers play Liverpool in the cup on a tuesday afternoon, when the electricity was off.

we, the Rovers Martyrs, were all called in front of the headmaster Pete Cater the folowing day........Dave, Ado, any of you out there reading this????

.......and as regards a breeding programme, is that why we haven't seen the Vikettes recently??

Longbridge, I went to St.Peters (now Macauleys) when Liverpool played at Belle Vue. We were going to (twag it) sneak off to watch the game, but because K.K was a former pupil at St.Peters then the headmaster allowed us to officially attend the game and our school bus even dropped us off at the ground, the deal was that we had to wear our school uniform.

that is so unfair!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used the fact that Danum Grammar were allowed off as the main tenet of the case for the defence, plus the fact that i was a loyal Doncastrian, the lion then on the Rovers badge was also Donny Grammars lion, plus i was not a glory hunter having been to Anfield for the away tie when everyone said we'd be slaughtered.

to no avail, the rugger bugger bas**rd still awarded an official black mark against my name, [which was added to the following year following my further indiscretion of over-indulgence at the parents evening cheese and wine event in front of the mayor].

My 5 year old lad has football training in Epworth on a Saturday where there are as many Rovers kits on show as Manure and Liverpool ( no Chelski ones surprisingly). Had to laugh when I overheard a kid in a Man utd kit ask him why he didn't support Man utd? His reply was \"cos we've got Billy and you've only got Rooney\"

Of course the plastic Manure had no idea what my son was talking about! Lol

That's a pretty poor excuse  because I was at Danum Grammar at the time and we weren't allowed to go. In fact at that time we were on a split site and I was at the one just off Bennetthorpe so we could hear the crowd but couldn't go.

Ha ha Berkshire!! I was up the Armthorpe Road site. I bunked off. So did quite a few others. But I suppose I had an unfair advantage really. My Dad was a headmaster down Clay Lane. He closed his whole bloody school and gave 'em the option of going with him to Belle Vue or going home :) I tagged along with him of course so if Eddie Semper (or had he gone by then?) had got mad, I could have told him I was with another Headmaster who gave me permission :)

I was at Anfield too :) We almost won it............

so BobG bunked off from Danum, some of my mates from Danum's Armthorpe Rd site also went and i thought it was ok for them to do this as it was more of a football school than Donny Grammar.

Berkshire was presumably at the old Danum Girls school!!!!!

next time the lights go out at the Rovers and theres a game played on a tuesday afternoon, it won't be because of the miners, but the price of oil thanks to war, or the closing of nuclear power stations because of fear of radiation.

but the bigger controversy remains, will today's and tomorrows kids be allowed to go now they are no longer a minority in their own town??

I attended DGS between 1961 and 1968, before moving to Coventry to work in the motor industry. In 1982 I moved to Longbridge and lived in Shirley which is also 97 or so miles from the Keepmoat. Some coincidences there. I also remember The Liverpool replay but in my case it was arranging a day's holiday at short notice as I am oviously more ancient than some on here.

I certainly was at the old girls site, we had 2 heads, Miss Woollett at the Girls school and Mr Remington at the boys site by the time I got there. (73 to 78).

A great trip down Memory Lane this thread is.

I was also at Danum Grammar at the time of the Liverpool game at BV and like Bobg, I sneaked out of school (Armthorpe Road site) to watch it.

As Longbridge said, Rovers fans like me were very much in the minority at Danum in those days.

A bit more recent but back in the third division winning season I was in year 11 at school approaching my GCSEs.  The trouble I got in for skiving an afternoon off to travel to a Rovers game.  Got my way out of it though when I bargained with a teacher - he'd done the same
