The question arose because the quoted statement says HAS not HAD. Ergo current squad, not what has been in the past. I stand by my question m'lud.

Full Quote here,

My thoughts exactly. Good post. SOD created a team where we are subject to £3million bids for our top player. Did anyone think that would be possible 5 years ago? It doesnt seem long ago when we were all raving about Sunderland looking at making a 6 figure bid for Andy Watson. Wow! Six figures! SOD has put together a side with plenty of players worth over a million each. Unfortunately like many top managers around, you cant always continue to grow and eventually fall victim of your own success. Many more will follow. Good luck to him. He'l brighten up MOTD within 2 years anyway. Possibly join Redknapp and Joe Jordan, perhaps Birmingham next?[/quote]

We can split hairs over terminology, and as it happens I agree we don't have a team full of players worth a million, it'd be nothing short of a miracle if we did! However, in respect of what O'Driscoll did do for us, it would be fair to say he brought in a lot of players that appreciated in value and made the club money (or are held as assets). People take that for granted a bit, but if you look around the leagues, especially the higher you go, there are many more examples of clubs paying inflated fees for the finished article, only for the player/and or club to depreciate far quicker than expected. We haven't done that as a club and it's to our credit.

The knockers will point to the cheaper signings that didn't work (Thomas, Souza etc. etc.) but it would be folly not to give the guy some credit, from a footballing and business perspective, for some of the players he brought to this club. If it was that easy to bring in players on a tight budget and see their value increase (whether to a threshold of a million or not) and survive at a level beyond their means, then more clubs would do it.

By the way, the more games he plays, the more money I would be looking for for George Friend if we ever had to sell him. I think he will go on to be worth seven figures, if he isn't already.

OK jonathon, SOD brought in ( or someone did ) 2 players and sold on for good money, a third was brought in at a pretty hefty cost for DRFC, and he was a no brainer, always was going to be worth more than DRFC paid.
Unless i now speak a foreign language, or speak in Tongues, that is not Plenty, whether its differing terminology or not.
