DS expects interest in Coppinger

DONCASTER Rovers boss Dean Saunders has admitted he expects star man James Coppinger to leave in the summer.

Relegated Rovers are bracing themselves for a number of key departures as they prepare for League One football next season.

But it is the name of Coppinger which will most interest Ipswich fans after Paul Jewell targeted him last summer and admitted last week he would be interested in renewing a bid.

But while Jewell said on Thursday that he would speak to Saunders after Saturday’s match between the two sides, the Rovers boss said: “Paul Jewell hasn’t spoken to me. I know he was interested last summer but I haven’t heard anything.

“He’s (Coppinger) got two years left on his contract. I would imagine some clubs will come in for him.

“Some players, I really don’t want to lose but if a Championship club comes in and offers them more money, I can’t really stop them.

“Now the season is over with, people will probably start making some moves but there are lots of teams still playing, in the other divisions and the play-offs.”

Saunders added defenders George Friend and Tommy Spurr to the list of players he expects to leave the Keepmoat.

Sounds like Deano is trying to get them in the shop window to me  :headbang:

I don't think it sounds like that. Sounds like he's being realistic and preparing the fans for what may happen.

I've got no problem if he is, it would seem we can't realistically expect to keep Copps unless the rest of the squad is from non-league Oxfam City.

Copps is too good to be expected to be in League one and we're a league one club only able to pay him league one wages too.

I agree with you both.

Sorry it wasnt ment to sound like a negative post.  I just think that although he expects them to leave and is pre warning the fans, I also think he is trying to "promote" the players in public.

Which is fine, he has the best interests of the club at heart.

I just wish we could afford to keep some of them  :crying:

Certainly looks like it's going to be complete turn around in playing staff, it would not suprise me if we had 4/5 of the current squad left with everyone else leaving.

One thing is certain, it is going to be a very different looking squad next season, and it is going to be very difficult to get in any kind of quality that could see us competing at the top end of the table. I am very aprehensive.

At least he's being realistic. I would rather that than build hopes of doing 'everything the club can' to keep certain players, and then sell them at a lower than market value price!!

Some of the high earners must go, simple as... just a shame the three he mentioned are the 3 that most would want to keep. Spurr would be immense in League 1, as would Gorgeous. But then Husband looked like a very good prospect for league 1.

Nervy, but exciting times ahead, simply because it finally means we can get rid of as much of the dead wood as possible, something we've needed to do for a while

UP THE HOOPS!!  :scarf:

I get the feeling that we're going to have a season like Scunny just had... hopefully that'll be the worst case scenario!

We need to get back to back wins asap otherwise this 18 month run will turn into 30 months and we could be in the same situation as Scunny or worse. However reading what Ryan said over the weekend, the future doesn't seem as bad as that. I would be happy with mid table next season with beating Scunny home and away, but if we happen to get promoted on a low budget I'll be more over the moon.

The question we have to ask is do we want to stabilise or do we want to go for broke.  If having a rather dull season brings stability, then I'm all for that.  What we must do is be more sustainable and not threaten the future of the club.

If you gave me Scunny's record this season now, I'd bite your hand off. Yes, they've flirted with relegation but they've stabilised and might do Ok next season. We have to accept that with a big turnover of players we're probably going to struggle. JR is a natural optimist and also wants to sell season tickets, but I hope he's not getting people's expectations set too high.

With two years on his deal I would hope we at least get a decent chunk of money for Coppinger. We could really do with it.

I think he should stay and I think he will. There are a lot of pluses for the team and him personally if he stays

I wonder if any transfer fee we get for Copps or other players would then be passed on to Saunders for new players.

If, and it looks like it, we have to get rid of high earners, we will let them go for no where near their realistic price, take Billy for example. Fire sale.

Mr Frost .... no not according to the comments on Rovers Player . Deano is already £1 million OVER budget due to the high wages of the 12 players still on Championship rates. A repeat of the Ipswich bid of £300,000  would effectively lighten that deficit by half a million taking into account the estimated wage of £5,000 a week Copps will be on.
What would change the picture would be if Dick Watson and Terry Bramall were to match JR's personal seasonal commitment as they did in the previous 4 years. I imagine they will nor re commit anything until the Keepmoat issue is signed sealed and delivered thus adding to the theoretical value of their current shareholdings( in the case they were to sell their interests in the future). A long term lease ( echos of Belle Vue and Westferry ha ha )adds value .

like cussy i hope he stays

not only stays but made captain

he was the only one to come out to condemn the "experiment" and has also taken on corners and free kicks

leadership qualities which we will need in spades this season

it also shows some bottle to keep our best player and may help with season ticket sales

Is the budget not determined by the salary cap, which is a proportion of turnover? I'm not clear how Bramall or Watson could increase this turnover figure.

Perhaps Terry and Dick are going to buy the empty seats in the keepmoat at every game

I think that JR and Dean should consider making Copps the Club Captain. Copps has done much for Rovers in the past and to make him club captain may persuade him to stay on. He's a senior pro that has lots of experience to pass on and JR and Deano should really try and capitalize on that and give him the recognition he deserves.     :rtid:

Lot's of talk recently about how a good set of Senior Players will make the club tick much better and determine how the club will do. Something Sir Alex shouts about, as does Arsene and Chelsea and many coach's.

I think Copps and 3-4 solid reliable, fit senior players would help steady the ship or take them higher.

Smashing up the entire squad, is not the way forward IMO.
