Deano eager to get going

DONCASTER Rovers report back for pre-season training today - just eight days before their first warm-up game.

“The training ground at Cantley Park looks in great condition and I can’t wait to get started,” said Rovers’ boss Dean Saunders before speaking at last night’s Supporters’ Club AGM at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Rovers, who have broken with recent tradition by going out of the area for their first pre-season game, take on Cleethorpes Town tomorrow week. Their next three games are also away before hosting Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City and Barnsley.

“I’m excited about our pre-season programme,” said Saunders. “We got a good mixture of games, a lot of which are local which is what I wanted for the supporters.”

Rovers were expecting just 15 senior players at today’s session - the 12 contracted players and their three summer signings, David Syers, Robbie Blake and David Cotterill.

“I’m not expecting any of the released players to turn up but even if they do they won’t be involved, not least because of insurance issues,” said Saunders.

The Rovers’ boss declined to rule out the possibility of at least one of the released players being at the club next season.

“I’m talking to Paul Keegan because he is the sort of player we need in midfield,” he said.

“I’ve offered him a deal but we are still talking because we’ve got to protect ourselves because he has missed most of last season with a knee injury.”

But he appeared to rule out the possibility of such as Simon Gillett and John Oster returning.

He said that Gillett had been made two offers that he was unable to match and that he couldn’t afford to pay Oster’ anywhere near what he was on last season.

Saunders admitted that he was was still in ‘limbo’ and remained ‘frustrated’ at his inability to bring in some of the players he has lined up

I'll be annoyed if out of everyone we released the one player we decide to keep is Keegan.

Why. If fit Keegan is just the type of midfielder we have lacked. I hope he stays.

Keegan's reading of the game needs to improve, for me.  He's a battler, certainly, but cant be effective when the ball just goes over his head (as it seems to do a lot).

It still sticks my craw when I here that money was spent on the "Experiment " and not given to Saunders to bolster the team when it needed it most and given him the correct opportunity to do what he was brought into do "Manage a football club" and here we are trying to off load players that could have gone last season if needs be . Strange job the managment lark.

The problem is are the players who are going to come in better than what we already have?,we do need a good mix of players in the squad, ball winners are much needed in our squad because we have got some good players on the ball,a major point of a ball winner is he needs good football intelligence i.e not getting caught out of position, technically good with a good engine to get up and down, does this describe Keegan?

We have too many players past their proven best and any improvement will have be on a budget and long term .

That's where we get to see how good the scouting network is Rovin,a manager's only as good as the scouting system he sets up,this is where we have failed in the past at times, though we have got a few good signings pretty cheap,it's definitely something that needs to have improved for us to do well!!

The "if fit" is surely the key phrase here. Maybe he's being signed to keep Martis and Martin Woods company in the treatment room.

It's very frustrating that we have not managed to unload any of the high earners, time is running out as the players we are interested in are now needing to make some descisions else they wont get a pre-season in...
I hope we can get rid of players like Martis, nothing against him as a defender but has groin and hamstrings made out of silly string and cant play more than 3 games without needing a month off.....

They'll be queuing round the block to take him.

Exactly, hardly gonna get buyers when you're trying to offload high earning under achievers. What a daft strategy. Too late now, no one will want em, which may mean we'll be OK cos the ones we're trying to get rid off are league1 anyway, withh the odd exception.

Can we not adopt a strategy of fining certain players for ridiculous things in an attempt to force them out of the club?

Not the best policy, but how else are we going to get rid of donkey's like Martis or Sullivan when it is quite clear that nobody else is going to come in for them?

This isn't Championship Manager, so no we can't do that.
