Yeah, and a good sprint by Cav! Nice to see us win something for a change!

Ah but is it the greatest ever British sporting achievement (after Rovers winning at Wembley of course)? Just to remind you he has ridden over 2000 miles in less than 90 hours - quicker than anyone else could.

Tricky one Wilts. If you consider it purely on an individual level, it is the hardest, most mentally and physically demanding sporting event that I can think of. However, as you pointed out last week, without a strong team a rider can't realistically win it, so therefore can it be viewed as a purely individual achievement?

Probably.

Absolutely fantastic stuff to watch. Sky were terrifyingly strong as an outfit, I'd have loved to have seen them clash with Schleck and Kitsonador too though.

Brilliant achievement, watched near enough the whole thing. Wiggins is a legend now, Cavendish too. Hopefully Sky send Froome after the GC title in next years Tour.

And yes, I do think it is the greatest sporting achievement in the history of Britain.

Would've been nice if Cav still had HTC and he'd managed to win the Green Jersey too, but phenomenal all the same. Didn't think I'd ever see this.

Top marks to Wiggins for this achievement. He seems to have grown has a person as well as a rider and seems to have the respect of his peers. We has English/Brits should be proud of what he has done and long may he continue to win more accolades in Cycling.

I can see a New Years Honour coming his way soon.....oh and Sports Personality of the year too.

Fantastic day. Not one I ever thought I would see.  Great to see him win it showing great sportsmanship and letting his personality come through.

He's a massive Tom Simpson fan and sometimes races with a picture of Tom on his handlebars so a lot of older local riders will be especially happy to see his success.

.... BUT if he was born in Ghent (Belgium) can we say British victory ?

.....or do we accept as with John McEnroe (born Germany) that where you were brought up counts ?

Worse still, his dad was an Aussie.

Incidentally, not much of Team GB's Road Race team were born in the UK:

Wiggins - Born Belgium
Froome - Born Kenya
Millar - Born Malta
Cavendish - Born Isle of Man
Stannard - Born Chelsmford

He's got a British licence, therefore he's a British rider, that's the way it goes (plus I'd expect he has a British citizenship to boot).

Have you not seen those sideburns, would anyone else other than a Brit look lke that, a cross between Pete Townsend c1967 and Lemmy. Plus the bloke was brought up in Kilburn - if he says he's British then he's British - you dont argue with people from there if you know whats good for you...

Btw = which member of the British track cycling team, a gold medal winner in Beijing, was born in Barnsley & brought up in Denby Dale?

As for wiggos dad being an aussie he soon dumped him and he had to tough it out as a true london geezer in contrast to the public school advantages chris hoy and a lot of the other olympians had. Anyway aussies are just  brits with criminal records arent they ? :chair:
