Hooper for England ?
« on October 03, 2012, 01:02:40 pm by Highland Rover »
Local Scottish press keep mentioning Gary Hooper ( Celtic ) as a possible England player . This got me thinking as to the last player from a Scottish club to play for England .
I've come up with Mark Hateley (as a Rangers player ) in 1991-92 against Czechoslovakia and Gary Stevens , also at Rangers  in 1992 .

Surely there have been others in the last 20 years ???

If he wants to play for england he needs to test himself in such as the Premier league

remember he's only played in the L1, Championship and SPL

different kettle of fish in the top league to them

He should be given a chance. He is scoring goals for fun for Celtic and they are a Champions League side. I know the SPL's level of quality isn't amazing, but if you're telling me it doesn't prove he can give it a go against San Marino and Poland, our next two opponents, then I don't know what your thinking is.

Lee Naylor should have been called up when he was at Celtic.

Hooper is no worse than Sturridge and Welbeck, give him a chance

He's played champions league football
Playing in the prems no guarantee. They don't usually get picked for being a goal scorer. Bent has probably scored most over last 3 years and doesn't get a look in, Defoe doesn't play enough. Good luck to the lad though hope he gets a fair chance.

Chris Sutton might have showed his face while at Celtic

Sutton has one cap for England. Earned against Cameroon in 1997. (He might have had more had he not refused to play for England B)
He signed for Celtic in 2000.

Diouf says the SPL is Sunday league standard, I'd say it's more league one/bottom of championship standard, point is a player doing well in the SPL doesn't necessarily mean they are quality.

Whether it is or isn't, Celtic still don't just sign any old shit players, and Hooper is leading forward for a team that is easily a class above the rest of the SPL. So discussing how good that division is perhaps doesn't actually get to the bottom of how good a player like Hooper is.

Anyone can see he's got a bit of quality about him so wont be long before he's in the prem.  He's no worse than what we have up front at the moment so give him a chance I say

We should have a very good clue as to the standard of the SPL if Lewis Guy Paul Heffernan and before his transfer to the lower levels of the Scottish League Dean Shiels have all been playing there as "starters" & not that long ago Richard Offiong was holding a place down at Hamilton

It is difficult to judge where the current Celtic side would fit into the English PL but presumably they would have the resources to strengthen their squad

They will still have individual players who are way above SPL standard but if Hooper is one how come he is not being pursued by Clubs like Stoke Wigan or West Ham if not the top boys themselves ?

Celtic aren't championship L1 standard are they. They have had some decent results in Europe which is a good standard.

If Hooper gets picked then so should Grant Holt who was good in the PREMIER LEAGUE last year.

Alan Thompson, winger.  Celtic fans were clamouring for his inclusion in the England team.  He got one game, looked well out of his depth, and him and the Celtic fans were never heard of/from again.
