First team to win at Prenton Park in 2012
« on October 23, 2012, 09:41:19 pm by Jenny »
Sounds like a proper smash and grab tonight. Love him or hate him, Saunders has got the players fighting for each other and installed a bit of grit in the side.

We'd have lost that game 18 months ago.

Great result, sounded like a cracking game too!

Only worry is all the potential injuries, hopefully nothing too serious for Saturday.

Sneaked into the play off positions as well, regardless of the game in hand.

Massive game on Saturday now.

Wasn't there tonight but saw the turnaround on Satdi. There's something beginning to stir here and it seems its central core is a big lad and a big rock solid heart called Rob Jones.

For battling qualities and hard work that was the best away performance I've seen in years. The complete away performance that

Smash and grab is about right.

Tranmere went at us from the off but Rovers actually had the best chances in the first half and Paynter hit the bar.

Second half saw us get an early goal and then it really was backs to the wall. We got absolutely clobbered so it was no surprise when Tranmere finally scored. The only question was would they get another. And then out of nowhere a bit of intricate passing on the edge of the box involving, of all people, Bennett - who had been shite up until that point - and Hume played in Hume who spanked it past the keeper from a tight angle.

A terrific game well worth the admission fee. Jones - who has imho been worth at least a dozen points to us this season already - was his usual immense self. Harper was top drawer also. Credit as well to Keegan who I don't rate but who had a great game tonight breaking up the play and putting his foot in. Bennett was like the youth team lad who had won a ticket to join the first team for the night. Compare and contrast - Tranmere's Robinson all jinking runs, clever turns and directness, our Bennett doing a passable impression of a little boy lost.

Right now we don't have a midfield worthy of the name. We have a good defence and strikers who can bag goals but we desperately need a midfielder or two who can put their foot on the ball and hold it in the final third. Cotterill was the only guy who could do that and when he went off it looked like game over. From when Cotterill went off the midfield sat way too deep and the defence had to soak up an immense amount of pressure. Husband and Cotterill seemed to go off with knocks; hope they're ok and that it's nothing serious.

However, forget all that. We were great and beat the league leaders at their place. End of. For me it's great to be seeing performances full of character having seen the cack dished up over the past two years. Saunders is far from clueless but he's on a big learning curve for sure. He set the team up well tonight against a side that until Saturday had been scoring for fun. Well done Deano.

Seems as though the BBC think we were at home tonight from their text report on the red button!

What I didn't understand is that the first half we more than held our own and we played some decent football and posed a real threat. But for some reason after the goal early in the second half we just refused to do anything with the ball other than putting our foot through it, and every time it went to Tranmere who played it back towards the box and won corner and corner, we didn't even try the counter. Had we scored in the 70th minute or later I'd understand, but we had about 35 minutes of constant pressure and they were always going to score, and once they did I was certain they would get a second. I think Hume's goal must have been our 1st effort on goal since we scored the opener.

Defending after scoring early in the second half is a recipe for disaster, we showed in the first half we were capable of playing it high up the pitch but after every clearance from a corner or throw in our players seemed content with sticking in the box awaiting their next attack. Had we not scored I don't think we would have left with any points, we got lucky today but that is football and I would take it any day of the week against the team at the top of the table. There is however, lessons to be learnt from tonight.

Having said that, absolutely ecstatic after that, brilliant game and it is up there as one of the better away days in the last few years. Bring on County!  :scarf:

Yet another late goal conceded, whatever happened to performances before points?  Not good enough, not taking enough responsibility, not enough Frenchmen, only 6 places off bottom, Saunders out, bring back David Harle.

Away to a side that hasn't lost at home for almost 11 months, a side that's top of the league and only dropped 2 points at home all season.
Of course they're going to batter us if they fall behind, Saunders was screaming at them to push out but once they'd committed so many players forward in trying to get the goal there wasn't much else we could do but get dealer, they went all out for a goal.

Had we not got the goal so early then I'm sure it we wouldn't of been under the cosh the whole half. After they scored we came back into it and got the goal. On a sour note we got started on in the car park. Seems the quidd a kid brought all the young scum out for them.

Much better than saturday sum great defending similiar to when we played Sheff utd. After we scored we knew they would have to come at us but think we are more well siuted to sit back and try and soak ot up rather than push for bigger holes to appear for them to run at us.Sum say it was a smash and grab but would say that was more on saturday where as last night spirited team performance with great defending.Would take that every away game against a team on a high being top of the league and not lost at home for ages,as long as we dont get beat.

Good defensively, need to learn to keep the ball better in my opinion

Plus i feel we need another midfielder or two

Also we need to be a bit more versatile with formations as playing 4-3-3 we wouldnt have got over ran out wide as much
