Losing Ugly
« on November 06, 2012, 10:35:43 pm by belton rover »
Is like having a dabble with your mate's bird's ugly mate to keep him happy, and her telling you to f**k off.

Even winning ugly seems better at the time than it does in the cold light of day.

I can't agree more - although I probably wouldn't phrase it as you have mind - if you win ugly then it is great but when you lose ugly it doesn't half sicken you watching that kind of performance. The problem is we know the squad have it in them to perform better as they have done away all season, and when you know we are better it makes results like tonight tough to take.

The Jones injury ruined our game in my opinion, it clearly messed Saunders up who seemed like he didn't know who to sub on/off for the 3rd sub, and I don't think I would either, we needed to tighten the midfield but we also needed a goal.

I don't think relying on a half decent performance and a bit of luck to see out the game should be a game plan, I will take it if it works but we do need some foundation in the performances at home. We walked away from tonight with absolutely nothing; no points, no performance and no pride. Hopefully what was on the players minds should shake them into action and we bounce back on Saturday against a Bournemouth side that is slowly building a reputation in this league as a surprise package.

Funny how no one says this when we are actually winning. It's our first defeat in 10 FFS. I'd take that form to the end of the season.

There have been many posts on how poorly we have been playing, comments on lack of possession, amount of corners conceded etc etc., the abject boredom in watching this win , lose or draw.........will not improve our attendances. Neither will we carry on winning if we persue this 'backs to the wall' strategy.
Where have you been ?

You're not paying attention then, I've been banging on about the awful state of our football for the past month.

It baffles me how people can be so cock a hoop with winning ugly and are yet so dismissive of those that don't want to pay what little money they have to watch something so joyless.

If we continue to win ugly through to the end of the season, and win ugly in the play-offs, and win ugly at Wembley, then people will pay to see it in droves. Of course I'm being dismissive of people who don't want to pay to watch Rovers, these people have already made their minds up, that's their prerogative, they can spend their money how they want but I honestly don't know what they expect.

People are entertained by different things, personally I got no enjoyment out of watching us string 30 passes together across the back four and get beat every week last season, and understand that Saunders has had to completely overhaul the squad to weed out this losing mentality. It's our best start in decades, and it just boggles my mind that, after the shambolic embarrassment that was last season, and the complete overhaul of the entire squad in the space of just a few months as a result, that record-breaking start is not good enough.

Going by your logic we'll have sub-4000 crowds until the last few games (and play offs, etc) when things will pick up.  That's noway to run a business.  Nobody (yet!) is suggesting this is a SOD V Saunders thing either, it's whether it's worth watching for the money and even more so when we get beat.  There have been plenty of times in the past where I've watched Rovers get beat (away in the FA Cup at Rushden springs immediately to mind) and I've still been glad to have paid to watch the commitment, effort, guile and flair provided by my losing team.  It's not about 30 passes, but it's also not about not being able to string 3 passes together and end up lumping it aimlessly either.

It's a depressing time, mostly due to the financial issues surrounding the UK.  It puts into perspective what people can spend their money on and only a sadist (hi!) would keep spending money on something that makes them miserable.  Berating and hounding those people is only likely to drive them further away.

Not necessarily, I think we could be playing the best football this side of Barcelona and the crowds won't come flocking back if we're not challenging at the top end. Would I like to see us play a bit more football? Absolutely, but I also understand what we needed to do to cut out the rot from last season, and given the new FFP rules we weren't going to just magically replace like-for-like all the gifted footballers who left us. Success breeds success, and I honestly think Saunders is trying to get that foundation where we're difficult to beat (which we are) and then build on it simply because we've lost so much over the past few years. You've got to start somewhere, and really, Saunders is only just getting started with his team.

We probably will have low crowds until the last few games, but we would no matter what style of football we play because we're in League One and the casual fan simply doesn't give a shit about this league. Can't say I blame them, as you say money is tight and there isn't much in the way of glamour in it at all. However, some people enjoy watching us dig in and win ugly, just as some people enjoy watching free-flowing total football. The one thing everybody enjoys is winning and success. I'm sure if we had that £9m wage budget we'd be playing a lot prettier football, but we have to prioritise and Dean's priority is triers and fighters who get results and really, if we are up there come the end of the season, people will respond to that.

Losing when playing pretty - its like having the time of your life with the most perfect lass all eve, then she goes off with your mate at the end of the night. Once or twice is okay, but week after week? Give me an ugly win any day

Oh, don't get me wrong, playing pretty and winning is the dogs b*llocks.
