My first post is about the pitch.did ya see it on sat, heard someone say that its only supposed to be fit for 40 or so games and already he said were on game 50 odd or somethink, I know other teams playing onit brings in extra dosh though but how much exactly is it worth it.

The fact the rugby season has started won't help. Ruins the pitch.

Ptich looked like it was about 20% grass but still played better than the Bury pitch

It's nothing to do with the amount of games being played, its looking poor because its been covered over for quite some time to protect it from the frost. Covering it over stops the sunlight getting to it therefore no new growth.

To be fair the rugby that is played on the pitch won't damage it anymore than football u don't have all the rucks malls and scrums on it like rugby union so won't make much diffrance the problem like someone has allready said is the lack of sunlight on it

First off, welcome to the forum Scaffrover.  Enjoy your stau and be as positive as the rest of us :)

I think SM hit the nail on the head with regards to the pitch really.  The weather has been that poor of late it seems to have been constantly covered and had hardly any sunlight.  Oh well as long as games stay on I'll be happy.

Up the Rovers!

Have you seen the pitches in the Premiership this year, just as bad in many cases. Also did you see the pitch at Walsall for the Under 21's game, no rugby played on it.

Andy Thompson will tell you that you cannot have the amount of rain as you have had this year with the ground cutting up week after week, without it looking like it does.  Just be thankful we have a good groundsman, many other teams don't.

Keep up the good work Andy.

Grass grows in response to temperature and length of daylight hours, so is active when it reaches about 10 degrees.

Outside the growth period, (November through to March), it is helpful if the use of the pitch is light, because there is little possibility of recovery from any damage.

Unfortunately, the fixture demands do not take into account pitch management, and so avoidable damage leads to poor surface quality for end of season games.

Basically, re-arranged games should be scheduled for later, rather than freezing February nights, but the downside is possible fixture congestion.

So, I think we all agree that the number of teams playing on the pitch (which we all know is in a piss poor state because it's been covered) DOES make things worse.

Sorry I am not wearing this, 'there are too many teams', excuse. The rugby league has only just started so have not played on it since September. We dont have a reserve team. So it has seen one game a fortnight or so.

And with regards to the rugby, what about the Liberty Stadium, why is the pitch there in a far better state than ours? It is where the Ospreys RU play their home matches, and have been playing all winter. With west Wales being a notoriously wet area of course.

I am no groundsman but it has to be down to the type of grass and subsoil.

I did the stadium tour before the match on Saturday and the guy from commercial who took us round said that the natural-synthetic mix used is the same as Arsenal have, but that ours is not looking as good from a combination of more matches played on it plus us not being able to afford the special lamps they put on theirs to keep it green.

What a load of tosh. They've played one game and this weekend they were away from home.
Look at the weather we have had this year and last summer too.
