Watford programme
« on March 14, 2014, 07:57:37 am by roverstillidie91 »
Picked up a programme from Watford game and my girlfriend said "how much is it for a game?" As I've persuaded her to go to her first ever game. If my eyes aren't decieving me... no ticket prices for Home games or Away supporters club coach travel or anything. Not good if your wanting to attract more fans. Not good advertisement and everyone hasn't got the internet. Just a thought?

There is usually a page towards the back with ticket prices for upcoming games, and normally the coach times and numbers for travel are normally on the page by the Supporters Club, as they provide the coavh travel. Also there is usually a page entitled "Get Away" which looks at an upcoming away game with info for that game.

That said I don't have a Watford programme so can't say its definitely in that one, but just checked my Huddersfield programme and its all in there...

I have to say I think the design and layout of the programme has improved enormously over the last couple of seasons. Sadly the content is very disappointing. I reckon it takes me about ten minutes to read it cover to cover, and it is possible to skip over a lot of pages (such as the DRFC Exiles page) because they just repeat huge chunks of text from previous programmes. The stats section is dreadful, although I don't bother much about that as I keep my own stats.

I suppose it is all down to costs, but as someone who has collected programmes ever since I started following Rovers I'm beginning to wonder if it is worth buying one at every game.

Red Baron, I've spoke to Steve Utley many, many times about the stats section of the programme, because it's awful. If my memory servers me correctly he said the printers weren't able to change anything on it.

Seems a pretty lame excuse to me, MrFrost. Surely they can change any aspect of the design- although I appreciate they probably can't do so once the template has been set for the season.

We'll see if they change the design of the stats section for next season- but I won't hold my breath.

The last time I bought a programme, half the team line ups were wrong, the goal scorers weren't highlighted, it didn't show any of the unused subs and half the attednances were missing.

Have to say I agree with you John. I've got every Rovers home/away programme since 1955 and it would be very difficult to stop buying them as in a way it would ruin my collection. Having said that, current programmes have been disappointing both in content and pricing.
To me, these days, like most things, everything is more. I actually hark back to the 60's and 70's where it was cheap and cheerful, took ten mins to flick read before kick off or at half time. I'm not sure I'm that interested in players likes/dislikes, countless interviews full of sound bites and that repetitive page in every programme about the opponents top ten players in their history. It's all far too much now.

Funnily enough I had precisely that conversation with the doyen of Rovers programme collecting, Barry Watson. Barry dislikes the modern "magazine" format intensely and that is one of the reasons why he's packing up collecting at the end of this season.

I am a programme collector, but stopped collecting Rovers homes after our first championship season for the reason that they are too bulky to store, much of the content can be found elsewhere and they have no resale value whatsoever.

It was hard to make the decision to stop collecting, but once I had done it, I haven't regretted it.  I have sold all my surplus Rovers programmes at an auction in Sheffield and received next to nothing for them.  Boxes of modern programmes from all clubs (not just Rovers) sell for £5 to £10 at auction.

My Rovers collection now just consists of one home programme per season, club handbooks back to the war, special cup runs, testimonials, foreign opposition and one off special programmes like play offs, first and last etc? I also like the programmes from the 40s and 50s and sometimes pick these up on eBay or from the Supporters Club shop.

My collection is now much easier to store and I get much more pleasure out of reading and collecting the programmes listed above.  It also saves me about £75 per year in buying a programme for every home game.
