Rochdale & Crewe
« on November 21, 2014, 08:05:12 pm by Dutch Uncle »
I see we are playing both these two teams in the very near future, and I am reminded of a very personal memory involving these clubs.

As a kid in the 1960's I had a board game called Wembley - basically there was a board, cards for a lot of football clubs, and you played a whole FA Cup campaign with dice and money like monopoly. All the big teams were there and a few of the smaller ones, and it came with a few blank cards so you could make your own teams - so of course I made one for Rovers.

In the 1980's I was briefly married to a Dutch lass, before she suddenly disappeared with a Portuguese Golf professional (so I don't play golf or go to Portugal for holidays lol). I did have a lovely Dutch stepson for those few years. The Portuguese banned him from seeing me so I lost contact, but I have some great memories, and in particular playing Wembley with him when he was about 10, all conducted in Dutch. Of course he knew and could pronounce the big teams, but to this day I can still remember bursting out in fits of laughter when he announced a tie which had just been drawn -  Kray-ver versus Roch-dah-le (Roch pronounced as in a scottish loch). Priceless.

By the way in retrospect the Dutch lass leaving was the best thing that ever happened to me - a year or so later I met my wonderful Irish wife and I now have two lovely grown-up daughters.

Great story Dutch seems you prevailed in the end. I bet you find Dutch far more comprehensible than Irish ;)

If we're playing the "old men reminiscing about how shit games were before the Atari was invented" jive, I'll see all yours and raise you Owzat!

A game of cricket comprising nowt but two hexagonal dice. And every third go or so ended up with an appeal for a dismissal. A bit like when I was opening the batting for Denaby  25 years back.

We used to make our own 'Owzat' from hexagonal pencils

Very expensive bowling figures - even worse than 20-20 - something like 4-0-64-4 was normal

My and my brother were given the Wembley board game for Christmas back in the sixties.

Our day was temporarily ruined when to our shock and horror we discovered after opening the box that Rovers weren't one of the 64 (or was it 32?) teams included in the game! Our dad came to the rescue quickly though and found some blank cards and stickers at the bottom of the box, that were included so you could personalise your team in place of a shite team. So it was exit Millwall (I think) - enter Donny, as the blank sticker was stuck on top of the Millwall square and DONCASTER ROVERS written in the neatest handwriting our kid could muster.

Still a bloody cheek though and It still smarts a bit today when I have flashbacks.

I even remember the colour of the dices used to represent the different divisions, and how they were loaded to give advantage to the higher ranked teams;

 1st division home = Red.........1st division away = Orange
 2nd division home - Green..........2nd division away = Yellow
 3rd & 4th division home = Blue.........3rd & 4th division away = White

Saddo or what!

I had a subbuteo set from the mid-70s.  It was a world cup set with a model Jules Rimet Trophy but was several years after that trophy was retired in 1970.

Anyway, the set came with a stand-up scoreboard in brown plastic, with turnwheels for the goals (problem if you scored more than 9) and slots for the team names.  There were paper slips with the names on for the teams.  Buggered if I can remember if Doncaster were there or not.

I spent many times playing finger football with a subbuteo goal and ball, right hand was the striker and left hand the goalie.  I even cut the rear plastic stanchions out of the back of the goal frame, so I could get a similar net "bulge" that we had at Belle Vue at the time, especially following a Glyn Snodin free kick.

I drew a moustache on my number 10 subbuteo player, and pretended it was me! Worst part about it I wasn't an early developer who could grow a pre-teen tache......I was 28 years old and playing the game with my lad!

Childish or what?..............Do blokes ever really grow up?!!

Subutteo ... we had a school league with home and away matches in each others' homes on a weekend morning before going to Belle Vue from Dunsville Primary.
Last week in my district of Brussels there was a  24 hour competition of subutteo and scalectrix with teams from all over Europe . Fortunately bits of us never grow up .. the average age of participants was over 40.yrs

Great thread guys. I had Subbuteo, Wembley, Owzat, and Totopoly. One of my favourites though was Test Match. Anyone have that ? The bowler had a sloping right arm to roll the ball down, the batsmen had a bat on a string pulley and the fielders had a gap between to catch the ball lol. Fantastic game, kept me entertained for years whilst I was a kid.

Test Match, yep, had that one...

I had Crossfire too, a sort of shooting game to send a puck into your opponents goal by hitting it with ball bearings fired from a spring loaded plastic gun...

The bat in Test match looked like a hoover. I also had the horse racing game Escalado. Anyone else have that?

My cousin had Escalado. I loved it. I'm surprised it hasn't returned in an updated version, like battery operated instead of having to turn a handle like back in the day.

Sounds brilliant Draytonian! I downright love the idea of plugging all these bloody horses round here into the leccy. Scare the buggers off our roads good and proper. Horses are accidents waiting to happen. Shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a bloody road.  Fields is what they're for and fields is where they should stay. Mincing 6 year old girls on their sodding pony with doting Mum on some mega dong stallion riding shot gun pees me off summat rotten.

Plug the buggers in sez I.

Just had a quick look on youtube, there is a prime example on there, just put Jump Jockey into the search box. It used to be very exciting  to play, but it was the early 70,s
