Speaking as a non pro groundsman but someone who has noticed what effects walking on different surfaces has, why use such sandy looking surface and not something with at least a bit of organic fibre in it?

BRR for sports turf I think 5% is the recommended maximum fraction of organic matter.  I'm sure there are other reasons for it but the only one I know for sure is that higher levels encourage earth worms and the casts they throw up to the surface makes for difficulties maintaining a quality surface.

I can see that, but it looks like less than 5% organic matter in that pile of dusty sand in the pic. I'm sure the Belle Vue pitch looked much more like proper turf than a beach.

Belle vue i remember when walking on when we won the bottom division championship, was very bouncy you walked on it and it sprung back up, many people have mentioned there is a problem with the pitch.
