Paul Heffernan

Can't believe he hasn't got a club. I know he's been plying his trade in Scotland recently, so maybe he's suffering due to the lack of quality in the Scottish leagues, but surely he must be able to do a job for a L1 or L2 club ? Still only 33 same as Tyson !

In the last two seasons he's made 42 apps and got 6 goals, in the Scottish 2nd tier, which is a woeful league, and in my opinion a lower standard than English third tier. Was brilliant for us, but seems to have lost it. Not for me I'm afraid

Shame he has gone to the dogs. He was always a confidence player as I remember him. He would go six without a goal and look shocking then score in the next 8/9 games on the bounce, before getting injured and taking another 5/6 games to get going again.

Wouldn't have him back he left for a reason and I think he likes a good time, I remember seeing him out in town a few times on my sporadic nights out in donny.

Yeah its a shame.
I wasn't advocating Rovers sign him, I just brought the subject up out of interest as he's an ex- Rover.
We definitely had his best years I think & he's well past his peak, but with the right manager/club he could probably still do a job for someone ( as long as he gets fit & is motivated).

He was destroyed because of a tantrum of SOD. Man Management was disgraceful.

I'm not sure it's fair that he was "destroyed because of a tantrum of SOD". Admittedly O'Driscoll was often reluctant to pick him, even when most people recognised we were crying out for him to start, but I think there were reasons for this - the headbutt at Southend, for example, and the penchant for Donny nightlife as was alluded to. I think O'Driscoll was often at fault for not picking him enough, but at the same time I'm not sure that Heffernan did what he should have done - namely, knuckled down in training, kept a good attitude and made it impossible for SOD to keep ignoring him.

Blame from both parties for me.

I thought that SOD praised his attitude in training even when not playing.

I'm struggling to think of a single instance of O'Driscoll ever publicly praising Heffernan. Would have been fascinating to have had the inside line on their relationship.

Heffernan's goals twice saved O'Driscoll. O'Driscoll himself said that the JPT win (entirely built on Heffernan's scoring) bought him time when we were dreadful in the League. And then of course, we would have been out of the Championship as soon as we entered if Heffernan hadn't hit his straps when O'Driscoll finally picked him in 2008. Yet O'Driscoll clearly couldn't stand Heffernan. Right from the off in 2006.

I'd love to know the back story.

There had to be some sort of problem for him to pick Guy ahead of Heffs for so long.

In Dec 2008, when we were bottom if the Championship and Hayter picked a long term injury, O'Driscoll said in an interview something to the effect that it was a hammer blow because if there was one player in the squad who you thought could go on a scoring run and turn things around, it was Hayter.

Then when Hayter returned 4 months later as we won at Plymouth to pretty well secure safety, with Heffernan scoring his 10th goal in 19 games, O'Driscoll waxed lyrical about Hayter's performance. He hadn't said a thing in public about Heffernan. It was almost as if O'Driscoll resented Heffernan being the one who had turned things around.

Strange times...

I heard a few things over those years, about both Heff and SOD and the relationship. However, I just dont think SOD fancied him as a player.

Was he No.19  "Triallist" ? If so he didn't get a game & never played in their 2nd game either.

Same here but then am I right in thinking that this isn't an isolated case for Heffs and that there's been a couple of other clubs where he's had more than a respectable goals:games ratio yet the manager just hasn't fancied him for some reason?

I often thought that the way O'Driscoll was with some players, in this instance Heffernan, was recovered by Richard O'Kelly.

RO'K "seemed" to have a closer relationship with the players, but perception like this can often be false.
