Not sure if it's been mentioned before but was just browsing www.historicalkits.co.uk and noticed this year marks 85 years since DRFC first wore the hoops  :scarf:

Hence the nickname.

THE PIRATES.   Which was then just replaced by  "The Rovers"

I wonder why we changed to a plain white top for the Autumn of '48 but then went back to hoops in the winter of the same year.

I'm a bit dubious about whether we did change. The Football League had pretty strict regulations about changing kits and generally speaking these were not permitted during the season.

For example, in the 60s Billy Wright, the manager, opted to change Arsenal's shirts. They abandoned the white sleeves and had red shirts with white collars and cuffs. When Wright was sacked, Bertie Mee wanted to bring back white sleeves but the League refused permission. The season hadn't actually started, but the colours had been submitted to the League. So Arsenal had to stick with red sleeves for another season.

More likely, the white was our change strip and we wore it at home due to an unexpected colour clash. Also, I seem to think that in the event of a colour clash in the FA Cup in those days, both clubs had to change.

I looked into getting some tam o shanters made a while back but it would have cost me a small fortune so didn't bother in the end.

Wonder if wearing a wee tam o'shanter affected performance... Smoking jackets and velvet slippers were the away kit. Classy.

Was going to say,Maybe it was because of the snow?It was an hardman's game then,No postponements with snow on the pitch. The reds hoops would stand out, just like the era we used of orange balls in the snow. But just seen, the autumn kit had black shorts n socks,so you'd think they'd stand out in snow.
