5 out of work managers chasing Football League jobs

BY JAMES O'ROURKE ON SEP 30, 2015

The 2015/16 managerial sack race is starting to slowly but surely take out a few casualties. Two Championship managers departed on the same day earlier this week as chairmen and owners begin to panic after slow starts to the season. We take a look at five managers out of work that will be looking to be back in the Football League as soon as possible.

Darren Ferguson

The former Peterborough and Preston manager has today been installed as the favourite to take over from Paul Dickov at League One club Doncaster Rovers.

However the likes of Neil Redfearn and current caretaker Rob Jones will also have something to say about that. The son of Sir Alex was also linked with a return to London Road before Graham Westley was given the job by Darragh MacAnthony, however that move was never likely to happen. It is without at Peterborough where he made his name as a manager.

His open and attacking sides replicated that of what Kevin Keegan attempted with Newcastle United when they came close to winning the Premier League. He won promotion in consecutive seasons into the Championship at one stage. There is no doubt he’ll be back in a dugout at some point in the future.

Lee Clark

Last season was certainly one to forget for Clark as he was part of the turmoil which was going on at Blackpool. They were eventually relegated but he shouldn’t take it too personally as it is unlikely anybody would’ve kept them up.
He eventually resigned after relegation was confirmed and after a summer of recharging his batteries he’d love to get back in the game with the right club.

There was brief talk of him joining up with Steve McClaren as number two with former club Newcastle United, but that never materialised. He has endured mixed success as a manager so far but he has collated some important experience along the way.
He earned a Football League record when going 43 games unbeaten whilst with Huddersfield Town and masterminded a final day survival job with Birmingham City. There will be a club out there for Clark, but he may have to wait a little while to find it.

Danny Wilson

There aren’t too many managers out of work that possesses the amount of experience that Danny Wilson can offer. The 55-year-old has overseen that many games he is part of the elusive 1,000 game club. His most recent role was a second spell with Barnsley.
He couldn’t keep them up in the Championship and in February he was dismissed following a poor run of form. The majority of Wilson’s management jobs have been in and around the Yorkshire area. He achieved promotion to the Premier League in his first spell at Oakwell back in 1997.

His only other promotion was whilst with Hartlepool United as runner-up in League Two. His name hasn’t been touted about for many available jobs of late, but the same occurred before being appointed at Sheffield United and Barnsley. There will be a club out there for him but at this stage of the career it needs to be right one.

Steve Evans

Whilst the Scot has only been out of work for the last two days, you can bet your bottom dollar that he’ll be eager to get back into the game as quickly as possible.

He has already been linked to job roles in his native Scotland with the likes of Motherwell but there is the feeling he still has unfinished business in the English game. He has steadily moved up the ranks from being a non-league manager to now being an experienced Football League boss.

He is the type that loves a ‘project’ and Crawley and Rotherham fitted those bills perfectly. He will also be in-demand as three promotions in the last five years deserves him to be. He may want a little more time to do the gardening and relax, but come Saturday he will be a little lost. He belongs in the dugout and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him back in employment before Christmas.

John Sheridan

It was a surprise to many when Sheridan announced at the end of last season that he was resigning as Plymouth Argyle manager.
Whilst they did suffer defeat in the play-offs to Wycombe Wanderers, it was still a decent season for the Green Army. However he did reveal that had the desired hope to move back up to the north of the country to be closer to his family. It would’ve been interesting to see if he’d have remained at Plymouth if they had been promoted.

With him supposedly favouring the north now, you can probably rule him expressing an interest in any potential vacancies at the likes of Yeovil Town in the future! He won the League Two title with Chesterfield back in 2011 and won the Football League Trophy the following season. He is certainly effective in League Two and they’ll be plenty of opportunities for him to get back into work in that division later this season.

He too has been linked with Doncaster Rovers but that now seems unlikely to go ahead. He won’t be out of work for long though.

Why doesn't Darren Ferguson appeal to you? He'd a quality appointment and probably the best realistically we could get.

I'd be happy enough with Ferguson or Sheridan. Not enthusiastic about Wilson. Very wary of Clark (no improvement on Dickov IMO.) And I wouldn't want Fatty at any price.

I saw somewhere that Di Canio had thrown his hat into the ring for the Rotherham job.

I'd go along with those judgements. Di Canio has been knocked back by Rotherham apparently.
