Doesn't look like we've got any chance of getting him now, if we had any to start with !

Walsall the club are going to want to keep him - but it doesn't stop us approaching him or his agent. We should have moved in there straight away, now Rotherham are after him it makes it less likely.

How does anyone know that we didn't?

For all we know GB might have travelled down to Walsall and met Dean in private, which is the way these things should be done.

Well, we're 4 weeks on since we sacked Dickov so what became of it if we did? I am pretty sure we didn't anyway because the club was initially set on the application process it released. The talk of candidates already in a job only came with the last statement.

If they've rejected an approach from Rotherham why would they accept an approach from us

I wouldn't expect the club to reveal everything that they have done during this process.  They may well have approached Walsall, but kept it quiet.

As has been said before, we kept our summer signings quiet, so why not the manager recruitment?

I'm afraid some might be clutching at straws. If we approached Smith it would have come out somewhere. Just like Rotherham approaching him has come out in the media. Walsall are kicking up a fuss because they don't want him to leave - it would have been the same with us.

Depends how it was done?  Or alternatively we haven't headhunted anyone and it would have been down to Smith to apply.

Not clutching at straws, just offering an understanding of how the club may have gone about its business.  It is all speculation anyway.

Not sure I 100% agree with that Copps; the club have done well at keeping things under wraps recently concerning the signing of players so it wouldn't surprise me if they can do the same with talking to managers, even if they are currently in a job.

I doubt we'd approach Walsall when it's unlikely he would want to come here, and the board already have/had 100+ applicants to look over. I also think it's clear Walsall would have put our bid for him in the press if there were one, since they've done exactly that with Rotherham.

As good a job as Smith has done at Walsall, There are still fans on their forum not happy with him, It shows the manager whoever he is won't please everybody, He needs to be singleminded and do it his way, Whover he may be.

Potentially if they have a couple of interested parties they would want it known to stoke up the fee and bring things to a swifter conclusion.
