Best Player/Staff Interactions
« on January 06, 2017, 03:39:10 pm by Mike_F »
Following a comment from Raven Rover in the Marquis thread, I got to thinking about some of the great player/fan interactions over the years. I'm thinking along the lines of David May laughing as he was told his career had turned to shit whilst turning out at Belle Vue for a Man Utd XI while his senior team mates were on a Far East tour. I'll not post up any of my others for now but I'd be interested to hear yours...

Craig Fagan has to be up there (no pun intended). I'll let you recount the details, Mike. But fair play to him for his quick wittedness!

Ha ha... I typed that one out and deleted it to save for later but I may as well recount it:

For those not in the know, Fagan had a couple of broken fingers whilst playing for Colchester at Layer Rd and when a well known Rovers fan (hello Tisso) made a smart comment about the strapping on them, Fagan came straight back with the cause of the finger injury: "I've had 'em up your missus".

I believe the kids call that being "pwned".

Anyone recall the full details of "Don't look at him, you'll turn to stone."

Also before I forget about this one, "The Twelve Steals of Blundell" has to be one of the best bits of terrace creativity I've ever seen and the man himself laughing along was brilliant.

Aye, to a degree. Pre-season friendly at Belle Vue, circa 2002, against Hull I think. Right in front of the middle of the Pop Side the ball went out for a throw-in. Both Simon Marples and a particularly ugly troll-like opposition player, who'd been tussling for the ball before it went out, continued their tussle in front of the Pop leading to typical footballer handbags - during which big Mick gave the shout from the back of the Pop; 'Don't look at him, Marples... you'll turn to stone!'

Blundell was great for interaction with the Pop Side.

There was one game when we were coasting 2-0 up against someone at Belle Vue, and Blundell was near the middle of the Pop. A chant of 'Blundell what's the score' went up. Blundell was really reluctant to answer, so waved us off with one hand and gave us the Vs with the other. Prompting a chant of '5-2 to the Doncaster'. Blundell was still laughing as he won a flick on in front of us half a minute later.

I'd completely forgotten the "5-2" incident. Sums up the "Popside Dozen" perfectly.

No idea about the opposition or even the season but I was a very young lad standing right at the front in a sparsely populated Town End - probably some time between 1995 - 1997. The opposition goalie had a big nose and after a few minutes a cry from behind breaks the silence.

"Oi, Nob Nose!"

As a 8/9 year old I found this absolutely hilarious, but it seemed to rile their keeper so the wag came down to the front, repeating himself every minute or so.

"Oi, Nob Nose!"

After a little while their goalie says something along the lines of "Haven't you got anything else?" To which the reply was:

"I bet Tony Adams sends you a Christmas Card, Nob Nose!"

Didn't really get it at the time but funny as fook nonetheless!

I remember away at Woking. One of the local bobbies was a handsome black guy who had his short sleeves rolled up, handcuffs on hip and looked like an extra from George Michael's Outside  video. A group of us started humming YMCA which slowly grew into a raucous chorus. He saw the funny side.

I remember the time Gary Brabin responded to a chant about his size at Walsall by lifting up his shirt and rubbing his stomach. The Walsall fans loved it but the humourless prat of a referee booked him. He ended up getting sent off for a foul later on.

I think it was in the 80's at Bootham crescent. York got a corner. Before the ball was delivered a Rovers fans shouted "Dougie! Are you in Park lane tonight"?
Dougie stuck a thumb up and nodded, and then jumped up to head the ball away.

Although he's a ****, I begrudgingly respected Steve Evans for taking a punch at Belle Vue and welcoming it as part of the atmosphere there. I think he's always wanted the job here.

Peter Beagrie's face was a picture when someone on the pop side shouted "oi Beagrie..you and Barry Horne shagged a dog".

I also remember somebody getting kicked out the poolside by police for saying "ding dong bell".

Can you recall a televised conference match, Jamie Patterson was being spoken to by the ref, and Patto had his hand behind the refs back indicating he was winding him up.
Result a ticking off and a wink from Jamie.

That match away at Kettering the first weekend after Richardson was sent down. Rovers won, I think, but the funny bit came at half time when the local PA announcer came on to say something like "And now, for the visiting Doncaster fans, here's a record for the unavoidably detained Ken Richardson. It's by The Prodigy and it's called Firestarter'. Cue uproar :)

It was set up, I think, by a then avid supporter who lived in Kent but who travelled to just about every single match that season. Sadly, I can't remember his name nowadays. But he deserves to be remembered for that though.

Yeah .... we were coming back in Sheffield County Cup Final (or Semi v Rotherham) to win 4-3 * and KR scored 3 I think. We invaded the pitch at 3-3 and then again Minutes later when he scored again and the bugger just scythed me down

Red Card all day long these days !

* I remember the trip like it was yesterday but the results / game / scorers I will have to check or leave to someone with a better memory !

After a very short search I found this I had posted back in 2012

Quote from: 1879Rovers on November 10, 2012, 02:51:59 pm

Club have also announced that Keith Ripley has died this week.
Shame that Keith Ripley's death appears to be overshadowed by Bob's on this forum, but equally sad.
My main memory of Keith, who's son (also called Keith) played for Rovers a few years later, was against Rotherham utd at Belle Vue in the Sheffield county cup in the 60's. It is a bitter sweet memory, Rovers were 2-0 nil down with about 10 minutes to go, so my brother and I decided to leave early. After we left, Keith was brought off the bench to play as striker, a surprise request for a full back. It did the trick however- Rovers won 3-2 with Ripley scoring all three!........and we missed it all.....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I stayed (must have been going home on Rovers Express to Stainy) and that became my memory of Keith Ripley.

I believe there was a Town End pitch invasion when we equalised BUT there was a BIG one when he knocked in the winner. Lots of us ran on and as I ran alongside him patting him on the back he "fetched me down" with a deft left leg . To this day I am sure he did it on purpose - but as a joke - and I must admit it made me laugh

RIP Tripper Ripley
