JM is a great player but people are getting ahead of themselves..He's been playing in a team creating loads of chances,a lot more than the vast majority of other strikers. He is playing at the lowest level of league football having spent a few years drifting unable to secure a regular spot in a team in a higher league..So talk of 3m-6m is just madness...Right now with a year left on his contract his value for me is around 1m...That's reality taking our obvious sentiment out of it...

Don't forget, a buying team isn't going to pay a rate for what JM has done, its for what he could do for them.  Regardless of his past before this season he has rightly put himself in the shop window.  Teams at a higher level will always show an interest in the lower division top scorers.

If a Championship team were to want to buy him, they would be looking at him (and therefore his value) as a potential Championship player.  That's where the valuation should come from, not that he's just the best striker in the 4th division at the  moment.

I am sure he is not worth 3 - 6 mill in reality but to put admirers off those are the sort of figures the board should be quoting them ie pay that or leave it.

For me he's been better for us than Billy sharp I thought we got 1,000,000 for him.  I think marquis is worth twice that with the way prices have gone.

£1.5m, another 500k in add ons when he scores 35-40 goals, 25-30% sell on and I'd snap their hands off. I'd be sad to see him go but imagine what Fergie could do with that money.

Part of building a club is buying and selling players you can't get too attached to them. If the club get good fees and use the money wisely on a replacement and also look to strengthen the club in other ways then i'm not against anybody being sold. I would prefer to see him sign another contract then you can start talking big numbers if he does it in the league above.

I don't see this league or league one as being as good a standard as other years we have to be careful not to have an inflated opinion of how good we are. I'm not putting the side down i'm proud of what we've done so far things are being done slightly different behind the scenes in our transfer policy looking for up and comers from non league and not just signing short term players.
Ferguson has started what i wanted to happen in building a side that can serve us for a few years but we still have to persuade the loan players our place is where they want to be. If we lose some of those loan players it's not the end of the world but you then have to start again building up understanding in the squad.

It used to bother me when we didn't pay fees for players but really when we have it's gone wrong a fair few times balanced up with those who have turned out bargains i'm thinking of people like Stock Mills etc bought for a smallish fee sold on at a good profit. As a club having the reputation of being a place where careers can be revived or improved is a good thing players come and go we all have our favourite's but there's always somebody else to replace them.

Im inclined to agree with that.. however JM is playing in a lower division.
If he stays next season and then gets 20+ again then yeah we could be looking at millions.
750k tops probably now.

Sharp is mainly just a good finisher.
Marquis is that also but is more likely to be involved in build up play,is more skillful and more likely to "get under the skin" of opposing defenders.

Back before the season started and we watched JM at Rossington?, I asked my Mansfield-supporting colleague about him. Her report to me was a perfect description of how he has performed for us this season, with a few more goals to his name than expected.

According to some press reports Rovers would let John Marquis go for £750,000.  That seems cheap for a young successful striker.
Really ???
