Goals galore

From back in the day;

But strangely, no goals from King Alick;

Anyone here among the 6150 and remember the game?
It was about the time I started going to OBV, but I have no recall so must have missed this one.

Did the Darlo keeper have a total mare, or were we just untouchable?

I clearly remember that I wasn’t at the game as I was refereeing at Bentley Colliery! On the bus, (Leon’s), back home to Branton, it stopped at Belle Vue and some supporters got on. “How did we do?”, I asked. “Won 10-0” was the reply. “Yeah, right”, I said!

Darlington had George McGeachie making his debut on the wing after signing from a Scottish club. He missed two chances in the first five minutes.
Once we scored it just kept on going. I think that the keeper should have done better with our 6th goal just before halftime, it sort of rolled over his arm if I remember right. We played some good football and we all expected King Alick to break his duck but he missed out.
We could have had more and I think the last goal from Yogi was a shot from distance to round it off. A very happy walk back to Balby. Beer was only  2/- or 10p a pint as well for those celebrating after.

I WASNT there (as people will probably remember me posting once or twice)

Its my nightmare Rovers memory and even watching the following 2 Games at home 6-3 6-3 (what a sequence) has ever consoled me

I was hoping when we got to 7 at Southend we could get 11 and I could have got that incredibly large monkey off my back

Remember some of Classmates went and in parallel to Wiltshires experience above they said they were running back into Town for bus from Christ Church and people we saying " did Rovers win young un" - "Yeah 10 Nil" - " "good one kid bt what was the score for real" - "10 Nil HONESTLY - "Bugger off kid"

They said they did not convince one person !

Another who missed was Willie Watson who later played for us in two spells. Him and Malc Redfern who were intermediate players later had gone fishing and heard the result on a transistor radio.

Don’t remember anything from the game, but I was there. Was it the same season we beat someone 7-1?

I have good clear memories of that game. I was 12 and beforehand my Dad was wondering whether we should go or not. Eventually he said 'let's go, they might go mad and score 5'.

We were lower mid-table and I think Darlington were just above us in the league. A close game in prospect then.

It didn't work out like that, and every shot seemed to go in and we were 3-0 up in no time and 6-0 at half-time.

Albert 'Yogi' Broadbent, was an early favourite of mine. Rovers were a mere 9-0 up against Darlington at Belle Vue, just a couple of minutes left, and I was gradually making my way along the not particularly full Popside towards the Rossington end for a prompt exit at the final whistle. Albert Broadbent was strolling down the left wing with no real sense of urgency, showboating in front of the main stand, meandering towards the Rossington end...... no danger I reckoned so I sprinted up to the top of the Popside to get around the back of the wall and into the Rossington end and could you believe it, in those 5 seconds Yogi Broadbent had somehow managed to score our record breaking 10th and I missed it. I never forgave him.

After the game came the obvious comment from a Maths teacher - we went double mad!

Alick seemed cursed not to score in his first games back with us, and the Darlington game was one of 16 games he played before before he scored his first (which I also missed - it came while we were visiting family in Wales). Once that monkey was off his back he quickly scored another three in the next few games as the season ended. The next season he was the leading scorer in the land with 39.

Darlington went on to lose their next two league games at Belle Vue by 6-3 (Alick scoring 4 in that one) and 6-3 again before beating us 4-0 just after the car crash which took John Nicholson and injured Alick.

The Darlington keeper Chris Penman was a 17 year old I think making his debut. I don't remember any actual howlers but I think it safe to say he was not very commanding. He went on to play 30 games for Darlo.

Not to my recollection but we did beat them 6-3 in 64/5 and 6-3 65/6

Might you be thinking of the Friday night v Aldershot when we needed to get 7 to go top and did it ?

I was an 11 year old and my family had already moved down south so missed the game  but I remember seeing the score being read out on our old Bush telly.  They say you can always remember momentous things and I remember that just as well as I remember coming home from Highfields school one afternoon  and watching the news about JFK being assassinated.
