The Star
« on February 06, 2020, 12:05:50 am by Danensian »
Yet again the Star has failed to report on a Rovers midweek match despite being called "Doncaster Edition " and having Liam Hidden there.  I am getting fed up of complaining about increasingly reduced coverage of Doncaster matters including the Rovers.  You can be sure that if Wednesday or United have a midweek game it is covered in full detail.

Maybe Liam Hidden couldn't see the match? Just a thought.

Can remember nearly 30 years ago been desperate to read the Star to see if there was any news on my beloved Rovers! More often than not to be disappointed and find a write up on Shef Wednesday’s reserves and a story about the tea lady’s cat a Bramhall Lane. :crying:
So I don’t suppose it’s got much better.

I know many are attached still to the paper copy - but Hoden is constantly pumping out content on social media throughout the day. Appreciate the paper copy might not reflect anything like this, but Liam produces a hell of a lot of Rovers’ stories each and every day which you can read for free on social media.

The Doncaster Edition is just the Sheffield Edition with a different front and back page, it stopped being a Doncaster newspaper when Johnsons Press moved everything to Sheffield and the Doncaster Evening Post and the Doncaster Gazette ceased to exist

We are just a metropolitan borough with 305.000 inhabitants.
Insignificant aren’t we. !!!
It really is a shambles that we don’t have a proper daily eve paper reporting on all things Doncaster.
I would be surprised if the readership of the Star is anything above insignificant in Doncaster as are we really interested in Sheffield news.
Not bought it for at least 12 years. Nor have i bought the free press for the last 5 yrs either as all Rovers news in on the Free Press Website or DRFC site.

Simple answer is don’t buy the Star.

As someone who never buys a newspaper and hasn’t done for donkeys years, I can’t understand why people need to.
After all everything you need to know can be found on the internet.

Yes, I stopped buying the Star moons ago and the paper copy of the DFP. As you say, with the Internet, Rovers news tends to find you even without going looking for it.

Years ago before internet ,Retford Paul would cut out Rovers news from the local papers and send them to me abroad .He has always been an especially kind and thoughtful guy .

My dad used to post me the Green In every week when I was at University. Highlight of the week, getting that. Which tells you all you need to know about the social life at Loughborough University.

There's probably a correlation here Campsall, to be fair.

I agree Hound, although with the one caveat that the only people who I expect should still buy the papers are people who don't use the internet.

My dad for instance does not have a broadband set-up at home, he does check Rovers news on his phone and stays up to date through the Rovers website and my site (ha) but he still buys the Free Press every week.

But by and large yes, the internet has replaced print media in our daily lives now so people shouldn't expect great coverage in the papers as they simply aren't given enough resource to bother. Liam Hoden covers Rovers in great depth and does most of it through online now, which works for the majority.

hound I think if it was in the star it would or could e courage the public to go to games.  For me it is the floating fans that might buy a paper and see it in there. The Internet is only any good if you want to go looking for rovers, many would not go on the net unless they are fans but the floating public might see it I  the press and say I fancy that

I agree that we need to encourage the casual and occasional football fan. The regular fans will generally know what fixtures are coming up in the near future.

The average age of someone who buys newspapers is around 58 and clubs, ours especially tend to focus on younger fans nowadays so newspapers would be very naïve. It is a dying medium. Social Media is probably better at reaching people and cheaper. You can do targeted ads or just put something out from the Rovers page and watch it get shared hundreds of times.

Yeah, I agree about those people who don’t use the internet but even though your dad doesn’t have broadband, he does use the internet via his phone.
I do see a couple of older chaps near me going for a paper now and again but in general, not many do so now.
