Late night thought about today's game
« on February 05, 2020, 01:11:19 am by BillyStubbsTears »
We've just utterly and comprehensively battered Tranmere.

0-3 was a let-off. It could easily have been 5 or 6.

Think back, a generation or so. Tranmere were a side who we could barely hope to emulate.

A side, a division and a half above us, who snuffed out our naive hopes of getting to Wembley, with the likes of Muir, Steele, Morrissey and Malkin comfortably out-playing us (and leaving me, for the one and only time as a Donny fan, slumped on the terrace in tears at Preston Park because they stole away my dream of seeing my team at Wembley).

Then they went on to greater heights with John Aldridge, while we sank under Firestarter.

They were a symbol of everything we couldn't hope to be.

And here we are, a generation later and we've just battered them tonight.

Next time you feel a knee-jerk complaint about the club fermenting in your head, just stop and think. These aren't bad days, regardless of where we finish this season.

Another one to give a few of our fans food for thought.

Our impotent forward line are the 4th highest scoring
team in League 1.

Now there’s a thought.

Nicely put Billy.

I’m with you on the Leyland Daf semi final heartbreak too. It took me a long, long time to get over that.

I’m still trying to fathom how Kevin Noteman missed that open goal.

Yes you’re right! That miss would be all over the internet these days.

Hang on Billy, a bit early for tears...it was only the first leg. I was still convinced we would turn it round 😉

And its not all that long ago that their fans were apoplectic about Gareth Roberts leaving them for little old DRFC. And given their achievements and status in the years running up to that transfer you could see where they were coming from.

Great opening post BillyStubbstears - I can still
Vividly remember Kev Noteman wheeling away in celebration only for the ball to stick on the goal line - eventually getting hacked clear by a defender

Nah. They were head and shoulders better than us. We weren't coming back. The dream died that night

Well, we certainly lived the dream in the rain at Wigan a couple of rounds earlier sliding down that grassy bank! The dream will never die!

Awful drive there last night, crawling along our wonderful motorway network, but boy am I glad we went.
The disappointment of Fleetwood was blown away by a superb performance and an emphatic win.
It was one of those nights when you were just glad to have been there, and me and my bruvver left with big smiles on our faces.

A mention for Luke McCullough: great to see him back on a football pitch (I use the term loosely) and he put in a very good performance, possibly Tranmere's best player after 22 Kane Wilson.
One particular 35-yard crossfield pass by Luke to find their right winger was reminiscent of him at his best.

We had good craic with all the Tranmere fans in the FanZone before the match and I wish them well in their battle against relegation.

Further to my late night ramblings above, I've just checked our record vs Tranmere since we lost there in the first leg of the LDV semi in 1990.

P13 W7 D4 L2 GF17 GA7 PPG 1.92 - Automatic promotion form.

They must be our favourite opponents over the past thirty years.

I was at Wembley when Tranmere were in the Worthington cup final Vs Leicester, Tranmere had the player that had the long throw ins.
John Aldridge Vs Martin O’Neil.
That’s when Tranmere were at their peak.
