York Street ground Boston. Last ever fixture.
« on March 04, 2020, 10:05:21 pm by normal rules »
For those that like to tick off grounds and not aware, The last league game ever to be played at York Street, the home of Boston United will be played on sat 25 apr against Hereford.
Some rovers will have fond and not so fond memories of visits there.
As I live near Boston The away game for Rovers was one I looked forward two when both clubs appeared in the same league for a very few seasons. and being a Rovers supporter myself the rovers home fixture always had a bit of extra spice. They were all good games too if memory serves.

The pilgrims will start season 2020/21 at a brand new stadium on the outskirts of town, which is well underway.
Boston may manage to secure a “cameo” last game at the ground to give it a good send off , but I’ve not heard anything yet.

Rovers have an attractive home game against Ipswich on this day, And I for one hope they have something to play for.

Anyway, I’ll put this out there for anyone who may be interested in getting to an old town centre ground before it gets bulldozed.

Happy to say I have been for a memorable game, albeit a 0-0.

We won the Third Division title there in 2004 and Boston's players gave ours a guard of honour before the game.

I remember that game. They were selling miniature Rovers flags on sticks for the kids and then confiscating the sticks before they went in the ground!

Didn’t we clinch the title at Boston a few years back? and fans were waving brown envelopes about?

Was Evans their manager at the time too?

I was hoping the fat bloated toad was not mentioned, it was inevitable I guess. And yes. It was 0-0 , the game rovers clinched promotion.

I to live in Boston. My son and me love the rovers. However, we love football and have been to a few Boston games.  I only live round the corner from the ground. I hope they get to the conference or what it is called now

Remember Dave Mulligan scoring 2 brill Free Kicks in an FA Cup game on a Sunday ?

I seem to recall one from inside left and one from inside right and both were perfect looking

I also remember their hooligans (age looked ave of 15) trying to reach Rovers end and being stopped on Half way and resorting instead to singing "Maggie Thatcher is our friend - she sacks Miners"

Yep, that was my first trip there. If I remember rightly we went 2 nil up only to throw it away and draw 2-2.

Hopefully the stadium move goes smoother for them than York's has. Best not knock the old ground down just yet if that one is anything to go by!

I recall the pieman being mocked at by the Boston fans and he lifted his top up and gave them all a big wobble.

My cousin was outraged by the nearby Chippy.

He orderedFish and Chips and they wanted an extra 50p for a plate knife and fork

As I recall they spotted him walking away from the kiosk with a double burger in each hand taking a bit out of each one in turn as he walked.

Mulligan's free kicks and a save from Jan Budtz that was remiscent of Banks v Pele in 1970 I remember well.

We had already clinched promotion, was it not the game we clinched the title ?

That’s what I thought?

“We are the champions” being sung by the fans that day...

True 2005/2006 was FA Cup and we won 1-2. Only time I have been so remember it was a) a Sunday cos Mrs DW went shopping in Boston b) DM's free kicks were sublime (hope I dont overblow them) and c) the Kids singing about Thatcher sacking miners d) wish I remembered Jan Budzts save but only room in my shrinking head for so much

I used to go past it all the time when I was at Boston College, you had to go past it on the way into town.

I wish it was memorable for me. I've never been as drunk at a match in my life. I was talking to Ian Nimmo in the town centre before the match. I wonder if he remembers how much I told him I loved him. That's about my last cogent memory of the day.

Got to admit I had a modicum of respect for fatty that day. It has been eroded again over the years
