Sunderland - Last year

Amazing how often the club get knocked with owners who are quite happy to easily sell players.  This article dispels some of the myths of giving away players I'd say.

What it also shows is how difficult the January window is for any club.

Just goes to show the club never wanted to sell him.

In negotiating terms, perhaps that was how Rovers set their stall out in the hope of the interest being really serious, they could have then agreed at £4-5million, which would have represented good business. As it happens we kept Marquis which was equally a good result. He was always going to move on after failing in promotion last season.

I’m amazed he didn’t end up in the Championship this season.

Probably not good enough, he struggles to get a permanent place at Portsmouth in Lg.1

You can't argue with it can you? We didn't need to sell, nor want to, so we knocked them back quite easily by the sounds of it.

Sounds like they are trying to justify spending £4M on Grigg

If Sunderland want to feast on the top table and contribute to the over inflated market then they can't expect other clubs to roll over when they come calling. You reap what you sow!

Facscinating watch although of course edited for dramtical purposes. Yet again another set of owners who think their knowledge because it is backed up by millions is superior to the manager when in reality they were already shafted by not having Maja on a long term contract. Maybe hindsight is helping but I thought consistenly saying Will Grigg was the managers choice despite paying more then double what the manager recommended was buck passing from minute one.

(Yes I have watched it all in one day!)

Also, some of the figures quoted about wage budgets were eye watering. Shows the need for clauses etc. No player was named but suggested they had a player on 50k p/w in L1 last year.

Probably Rodwell, as part of the arrangement with Blackburn.

Possibly, but then I wondered about Cattermole as they did mention in the first epsiode that they were looking to move him on.

Another possibility, could explain him being told to train with the kids not too long back. S3 could be interesting assuming they are filming them this year.

The epsisode where the January Transfer is about to shut and they end up paying Wigan £3m for Will Grigg is pure comedy gold .

Even the manager Jack Ross told them he wasn't worth more than the £1.25m they had bid .

For all he contributed in the second half of the season he wasn't even worth that .

The shitty thing about that though is they continuously label Grigg as a Jack Ross signing despite the owner behaving like a child on deadline day.

I think it was cattermole who was on 50k a week. Poor that no relegation clauses were in his contract. They were trying to get rid of him after their first relegation.

I saw Cattermole last month while I was in Holland. He was a substitute for Venlo away at Emmen. Venlo are one of the poorer teams in the Eredivisie and he wasn't even in the starting eleven.
