Ultimate Cult Hero - Eliminator #8: The Niners
« on April 27, 2020, 04:51:36 pm by RoversAlias »
Second poll for today, pitting four players who played together at Rovers as the 80s gave way to the 90s.

I will post the results so far from the other polls into this thread shortly too, to avoid bumping the olver polls. Thanks for your votes so far, there'll be two more Eliminator round categories up tomorrow!

This is the hardest one for me. Between Brevett & Rankine.

Don’t see personally how the other 2 can be compared, even with Bruno getting debut that hat trick at Rochdale.

Gone for Rankine. That magical goal at White Hart Lane that won the Youth Cup semi final just swayed it for me.

But it's not talking about best players. It's about cult heroes.

That Jones debut at Rochdale and in fact the way he reinvigorated a moribund team make him one of the biggest cult heroes we've ever had for me.

Agreed BST.

It was one of the most depressing times to be a rovers fan prior to the Rochdale game. We were near the bottom of the old div 4 in shocking form. We had heard on the coach on the way to the game of 2 new signings (Jones and Noteman) but i wasnt expecting anything after a string of drab signings.

The following 90 mins were just pure bliss. We had a new hero. We had hope, and for that Jones will always be my fave cult hero.

Can only be David Jones for reasons  cited above,   him and Muir must have been a frightening prospect to play against -   but to be fair to Jack Ashurst not many players were also responsible for the floodlights  staying on

I was at Springfield Park with my missus that night and she was well unimpressed at the state of the car on our arrival home! Voted Mark Rankine for several memories i think he scored a very late equaliser in fa cup playing Chester away at Macclesfield's ground ? My mate inflated a marigold glove and we kept it up like a balloon for seemingly ages. Happy days. Lost replay 2.0 at Belle Vue. Someone please correct me if I have misremembered something.

Yes i was there at Moss Rose. 2-0 down with about 10 remaining and scored 2 late goals. Felt like a win, as a kid i lived and breathed for the FA cup, lots of singing on the way back to the train station. Sadly as you say we lost the replay, though i thought it was 2-1 i might be wrong. Our FA cup record that era was simply dreadful.

Fair enough BST
I should really have voted for Rufus Brevett then. Bruno didn’t play much more than 1 season for us if my memory serves me right.
So although Bruno was a cult hero so was Rufus and he played twice as many games for us.  Just swings it for me.

Brevett and Rankine were superbly talented and I loved watching them. But as a cult hero, Jones is miles above them for me.

This one is dead close overall between Brevett and Rankine with a couple of hours to go, so if you haven't got your vote in yet please do!

Got to be Bruno for me. Possibly the greatest debut I’ve ever seen. And of course that away match at Wigan will forever be remembered by those that were there!

Agreed 100%.
Jones is simply the greatest cult hero that we have ever had at the club in my 50 years of watching us. And yep, THAT debut and THAT night at Wigan...
