Ultimate Cult Hero - Eliminator #10: The Scorers
« on April 28, 2020, 02:41:26 pm by RoversAlias »
Second vote for today, also pitting four strikers against one another, this time focusing on players with a better goal-to-game ratio overall. All from differing eras, so I'm sure we'll have some polar opposite viewpoints!

Warboys was brilliant as a striker he was as hard if not harder than the centre backs he faced & used his physical strength when he reverted to playing at centre back himself - he completely dominated a young Tony Cunningham who crawled out of Warboys pocket at the end of the game - he was also cute with his aggression he’d ensure he was on the blindside of the referee when he rabbit punched an opponent who had gone in hard on a young Ian Snodin

Never saw Gilfillan before my time as a Rovers Fan. As was Elwiss just.
Great admirer of Blundell as a goal scorer, who also played up front in the same team for a while with my step son Neil Illman at Northwich. Greg had a brilliant partnership with Leo F-W who i voted for in the other poll.

But this one has to be Warboys for me. Only saw him in his second spell and although he was past his best was still a proper old fashioned centre forward. A proper cult hero for me.
He also was a great player for the young Colin Douglas to learn his trade from.

They were all good in their own right but I think Warboys just shades it over Greg Blundell. I think cult hero fits those two rather more than Mike Elwiss and Bob Gillfillan though.

Warboys for me.

I loved Blundell and he was certainly a cult hero, but Warboys was something else. He and Little epitomised the core of Bremner's first successful team. Proper, iron-willed Mesters, who would not be physically dominated by anybody and created space for the more talented youngsters to thrive in.

Plus, he pulled a decent pint in the Ring O Bells in Swinton after he did his back in.

Close though. Blundell nearly got my vote just for that first goal back in the League on that balmy, barmy day.

Probably the hardest one to decide, Elwiss for me is as good a striker as we have had when we were not that good a side, and could have gone on to a great career if not for a bad injury.
But all four were what Doncaster Rovers is all about, and gave great pleasure to the fans Blundell, Warboys and Gilfillan in more successful sides in which they played a big part in our teams success.
