Musings #8: Can we move forward now?
« on June 11, 2020, 04:58:32 pm by RoversAlias »
Hi folks,

Our latest editorial is now up, musing on whether the decison to curtail the season this week can finally lead to the collective leagues/clubs moving forward to find a way through this strange, strange time. You can check it out at the link below:

Many thanks for reading and please let me know your thoughts. Are you tired of the infighting? Do you agree or disagree with the decision made by clubs on Tuesday?

Just be glad we have a club I'm expecting some to go to the wall or really have to cut their cloth.

Really hope we can come back next season as normal with fans in the stadium.

As regards the decision on Tuesday it could have been made weeks ago but some clubs just wanted to look out for themselves.

Personally I think we should have completed this season however long it takes

Do we know if the muted  1m distancing would improve the possibility of supporters attending live matches .

The atmosphere would be very bad though if the fans were muted.

At the moment we can move forward slowly, its very much baby steps.

The decision on Tuesday helped in as much as the current squad would be trimmed back to those on contracts with DRFC. Loan players were sent back to their parent clubs as is their right and helps them with their planning.

But what about us now? Without a clear start date for next season and no idea of what the financial status of clubs looks like yet, then how can any club make any serious plans with regard to contracts and players? You can plan and devise different scenarios and strategise as much as you like, but without any clear signs how do you take those steps?

Without a clear start date when do bring players back from furlough? When do you start training? Will you have to carry out extensive testing before players can train? How much will that cost?

All of this means we have no idea what the immediate future holds for the club and its supporters.

In other words, no one has got the foggiest. The elephant in the room here is an almost inevitable second wave in the autumn. There will be no appetite or regulations in place for fans inside stadiums.

Football is inevitably going to be split in two. Those who can afford to play without fans in the stadium, and those who can't.

League One and Two should explore the potential of holding a 'virtual season' next year, or virtual half season. Every game streamed, and squads cut to agreed budget limits. Take pointers from other areas - online gaming for example. Millions of people watch online gaming tournaments, donate stupid amounts of money live to their favourites streamers/teams, and you have sponsors, advertising breaks whatever you want.

I don't know what's safe and what isn't safe with this virus, as the experts are all saying different things. Would the mandatory wearing of masks at stadiums, along with mandatory use of sanitisers outside the turnstiles make it safe?

If there's no second wave before September, and the figures are well down, I'd be tempted to risk it if the above scenario was deemed as reasonably safe, as is the situation now with Tube travel.

I doubt they would say that makes it safe, but perhaps just safer or lower risk.?
