Adebayo Akinfenwa

Off topic but was speaking old Rovers players today and Bayo came up. Was trying to remember why we didn't offer him a contract? Remember him terrorizing some defenders in the brief games he had with us.

Was it as simple as him wanting to be based in the South.

yes dave Penney wanted to sign him, on the proviso he headed up north. Couldn't face the flat caps by all accounts. Shame.

He wanted to play closer to London, so signed for Torquay.

Shame, would have been a cracking player. Was signed on the same day as Mulligan too..... not a bad couple of freebies at the time!

They say no man is bigger than the club but he's certainly getting there.😉

which is in fact 20 miles further away.  🤔

That always baffled me as well.

It was Torquay he went to from us, I went to Torquay for the weekend when we played them, (wife's birthday treat I think) so managed to sneak off to Plainmoor for the game, and guess who scored against us? Yep,  right first time.

Was it mulligan or melligan?

Doesn't really matter mind - some fab players (relatively speaking) signed that year just prior or into the season.

Bayo
Browny
Melligan
Mulligan
McIndoe
Beech
LFW
Blundell
Rigoglioso

And there will be more that I've forgotten and obviously a couple from the list who didn't quite hit the heights hoped for!

No wonder rovers won the league that year really! Lol

Been thinking about the squad around that time and I don't think it dawned on me until recently, but does anyone else reckon we might have been pushing much harder for a play-off spot in that first L1 season (04/05) if we'd managed to keep hold of the strikeforce that got us promoted the year before?

At the end of 03/04 (Div 3) we had Blundell, Brown, Akinfenwa, and LFW to choose from. Imagine if we'd had Browny and Akinfenwa to complement Gregg and LFW in the 04/05 season rather than Ipoua and Lewis Guy! That's not to decry Neil Roberts though who came in and did a decent job.

Al great to see you back posting.
Looking back, in my mind we seemed to have a very settled side but in reality we used quite a few players. One only for a game at Carlisle

We were spoilt that year, what a team it was. Mcindoe really was a special player and we were lucky to have him.
