Sean O’ Driscoll

Wondered what he was doing now.

Just googled him found out he is Head of the Academy at Portsmouth.
He has certainly had a lot of different jobs since he left us 9 and a bit years ago.

Our best ever manager. Great times.

Couldn't agree more.

I have a few games recorded which I view now and again, like thrashing Leeds at Wembley for one.

Sean is the best manager I have ever seen at Donny but DM is certainly growing on me.

I think Sean should have stayed with England U19's but the temptation of coaching Liverpool was too much, he had to accept it, but the manager gets the sack within weeks and Sean is left in  no mans land.

Thats football you have to accept that the sack is very much part of the job, And that is direct from Sean's mouth.

He was with Portsmouth when we played them last season in one of the cup competitions (U21 I think) Thought he was there longer.

Sean has definitely been at Portsmouth since March 2019. He got the job just before I interviewed him for the fanzine, and we had to rearrange our meeting and bring it forward as he was in the process of moving down south for the job.

You can read the interview here

That is a fine interview. Reveals how many porkies were told about Sean and the broadcast 'gardening leave' story.

Sophisticated football isnt for everyone. I shall always admire his pragmatic realism and dignity. Unfortunately it's like offering a lager-swilling oaf a glass of the finest Chablis. If he dosn't have the taste buds for such finery the oaf will never understand and will forever insist it was rubbish!

Stop faffing abhat, gerit forward! Hooooooffff!

Each to their own, I suppose.

He was lucky to find an owner willing to accept a season of relative mediocrity (JPT aside) to get pieces and culture together for a real push. He spent heavily and pressure must have been on but owners gave him breathing space. Doubt many clubs could do that. He is criminally underused as a youth coach.

Cheers Gaz...

The plan was that he only had an hour or so free... we ended up talking for three; he's really good company. Some of the stuff that didn't or couldn't make the cut was fascinating.

Of the things I could repeat that might surprise folk, he's a big Northern Soul fan, and used to 'roadie' for a few Northern Soul DJs in order to get into Wigan Casino and other venues.

Any appetite to track down Sammy Chung or dare I say it, Mark Weaver? Both would be fascinating interview. Not sure what health Sammy is in these days. Must be pushing 90.

The difficulty with doing interviews for the fanzine is the time constraint. I have to fit the 'zine around my day job and doing interviews right involves a lot of time (setting them up, research, the actual interview, transcribing, editing, getting the interviewee's sign-off).

I'd do more if I felt the time involved justified the end product, or that I myself would get something out of it. Sitting down with Sean and Copps gave that as they're two people I really wanted to meet and speak to anyway, and I knew they'd both be really engaging.

Sammy Chung was a football man so could see that, only interview with weaver I'd be interested in was one  under caution

Weaver! I bet he has a story to tell. I'd genuinely like to know what makes him tick, he steadfastly stuck to his job while getting dogs abuse, surely most people would have not needed the hassle. I wonder if he was just too stupid to realise or Richardson had him on some form of mega bonus to get us relegated but under a veil of incompetence.

Wonder what he's doing now. Probably in a shallow grave somewhere in Moss Side with pool balls for eyes.

Bottom 5 that fateful 1997/98 season.

20 Swansea City
21 Cardiff City
22 Hull City
23 Brighton H A
24 Doncaster Rovers

Quite unbelievable to think those 5 clubs were the 5 worst in the Football League when you look at how much success all those 5 clubs have had in the last 17 years.

It is a funny old game init.  :that:

Barnsley, Bolton and Coventry in the Premier League that season. They’ve all dropped through the floor since then.
