I asked this question of the club a while back, after John Marquis had left the club. I made some notes of what was said at the meeting and I've just gone back through them recently, and here's the notes I made;

John Marquis was a free transfer and left for a significant sum that was then reinvested into the clubs infrastructure and first team. I've highlighted a couple of significant points here which are relevant to today's discussions**

Those changes were;
Change and development of clubs player pathway
Training ground works and improvements, including all new equipment in the gym
Contracts offered to other players after JM left. This is a result of the wage budget being freed up.

The First Team benefits were
•   Alex Baptiste joins (August 2019)
•   Niall Ennis and Cameron John (loan/ loan then permanent)
•   Donervon Daniels (loan)
•   Seny Dieng (loan)
•   Jon Taylor two-year deal (August 2019)  [he was in the championship in 18/19]
•   Ben Sheaf (loan)
•   Kazaiah Sterling (loan)
•   Ben Whiteman new deal (November 2019)**
•   Tom Anderson new deal (January 2020)**
•   Fejiri Okenabirhie (January 2020)  [A fee was paid for Fejiri and he was a definite target for Darren Moore]
•    Devante Cole (January 2020)
•   Rakish Bingham (January 2020)
•   Jacob Ramsey (January 2020) [A Premier League player]

Of course the summer transfer window happened on the back of no income since March and yet this is the work the club did in that time;

o   Jason Lokilo
o   Cameron John
o   Bursik/Lumley
o   Josh Sims
o   Matt Smith
o   Taylor Richards
o   Tyrece John Jules
o   Rayhaan Tulloch

The Academy has been restructured since JM left, with a new pathway - unfortunately the launch has been delayed because of Covid.

Thanks for clearing that up Gavin.

Gavin?

I read that as "Gavin has obviously told him what to write".

Thanks martin,
Just one question from me, wouldn't some of this have come from within the original budget, ie the loan signings the Baptiste signing?
If Marquis had stayed these details would mean we wouldn’t have done any business.
Surely the budget still had funds available to sign Baptiste, ennis et al, without the need for the Marquis cash

Yes, of course it would. However if you look at the quantity and the quality of the recruitment, plus the significant input into the club's infrastructure, plus the absence of any income since March last year, anybody should be able to appreciate that the Marquis money came in very handy and was actually the significant factor in keeping our heads above water.

I'm sure had we not sold Jm we wouldn't of signed as many or even the quality of some of the loans. Tbf you don't need to or do you see many in l1 and l2 paying g large fees for players. CJ will of cost money as did FO. We are very lucky to have a owner willing to put any money in. Just hope the next owner is willing to do the same when  the time comes. Because we have been spoilt this last 20 years fact.

That somehow may not pacify the nay sayers, can you break it down to individual payments and cross reference it to how other teams may have done things perhaps differently and less expensively....

Joking !
IMO all the above shows we tried out a lot of loan players but signed only one of them . So how many at that rate will Dm need to sample before he gets his own team . We’ve sold two players he didn’t signed and we put most of youngsters out to loan as they may not get in ahead of a loan signing . We let a player leave on free instead of doing what he normally does and loan him out and within a few short months is a top scorer at lesser club and gets a £1m move to a Championship club ! Not bad this managing lark is it !
 I know where we are in the League is brilliant but just who are DRFC and who is representing the badge . With Copps is leaving at the end of the season ? but we bring back 37 year old , who many believe shouldn’t have left in the first place and now our only goal keeper can’t get a first team outing ...because we’re on our third loan one . You couldn’t think this up ...and we’ve got  no supporters to see this going on and still 27 more games and a cup still to play . HELP!!

Thanks for making me smile 1969.
I try to be optimistic, but you are right about Max Watters, and I was livid when Andy Butler, Tommy Rowe and Danny Andrew all left.

Glad to oblige but we can’t keep blaming COVID-19 on all the clubs ills . We have half a team on the pitch that is under contract and the rest just passing through !

Do you live in the real world, or are you king of the magic money tree?

Of course COVID is the majority of the clubs issues, like every other club in the country.

Let me break it down for the hard of thinking...how would you be doing if you’d had only a small percentage (let’s say 30%) of your monthly income since March 2020?

The usual suspects could find negativity even if they won the lottery. £100m is not enough.

Oh, he thinks he's being clever Steve. As it happens some of this came from a meeting with Gavin, and some of it from a meeting with Shaun. I just put it together as though it was one meeting but it was actually notes from two.

SM - l could be wrong and usually are.... but the statement reads as if the club has issued it through you.

Martin,

I'm not sure how easy this might be, but I think it would be illuminating to show how much money JR and the current owners have injected into the club. If this could include all the debt written off and debt for equity swap, even better.

Hopefully this will show all the board bashers how generous the current and past board members have been to allow us all to have the enjoyment of watching DRFC.

On my way to Donny, I look out of the train window at Darlington to see a stadium with no football team and now occupied for some peppercorn rent by the local RUFC team. Perhaps people should reflect on that.

I've been thinking about doing something along these lines, it certainly needs documenting. Not sure if I'm the right person to do it, but as a task for the VSC then I'd agree, the supporters trust should have a handle on all of this.

We do have it but its scattered across all kinds of documents and reports, but it would be a good idea to pull all that together and record it, much the same way club historians do with playing matters we should have a financial record too.
