AJ Greaves
« on January 16, 2021, 05:55:39 pm by RoversAlias »
I hope this lad gets more game time going forward. He looked very capable today, strong in the tackle and able to get about the pitch and find a pass. Looked to have bulked up a bit from when I last saw him too.

Very encouraging anyway. Was it his league debut?

He looked at ease when he came on. Very promising.

Agreed, slotted straight in today. As you say looks stronger than last season.

Me and my dad said he looked a lot stronger than last year and looked at ease on the ball

He has struggled in a poor Gainsborough side this season.

Brian Deane was garbage with us but what a difference when he got to Sheffield Utd.

Very capable but his combative style gets him too many cards. The ‘red mist’ has always been a problem for him.

Has a bit of petulance about him which hopefully can be harnessed

The problem is if the player were not on the same wave length good players can look average or poor not because they are but because of who they have around them

I think Anthony Griffiths was similar. The basics of a good midfielder but got into bother on the pitch too often.

As said above you'd hope that DM can work his influence on him.

I note we currently have a few players now who show some petulance which could cost us if we don't put a lid on it.

The way we play means we're going to get some rough treatment from time to time but petulance isn't going to win that battle. That energy has to be harnessed in ways that hurt the opposition more than us.

So do we think AJ can cut it in the first team?

Thought he was very average at Gainsborough but didn’t see today’s game. Sometimes players can be improved by those around them.

I remember when Beardsley played at Hartlepool at the end of his career. He could still play a ball but those around him weren’t good enough to anticipate it. Made him look gash.

Was also at school with ranks. When he moved to wolves he said the difference wasn’t the ball skills of the players, just that everyone was where you expected them to be.

Yes, there’s the “man up” element of young players going out on loan, maybe what AJ needed?

About 20 mins. Not enough to form an opinion hence some of the comments above from those who have seen much more game time.

We have been missing a nasty little bugger in midfield for a long time.

He was superb for the u18’s and he made the step up to the u23’s ok, but with a few blemishes (red mist again). I hope he’s become a little bit wiser, by being on loan, but he needs to hang on to that competitive spirit as it’s what makes him special. I enjoyed watching him at Cantley, but you can almost sense when a card’s coming and a good experienced player alongside him would do him the world of good.

I can see why DM held onto him, when he had to make those choices in the summer. Unfortunately, MW missed out, but it must have been very close.

I've not seen enough of him to really comment but like I said earlier about his petulance, this isn't necessarily a bad thing it gives him a bit of an edge and we are often quilty of being too nice at times. Reminded me a bit of Deli Ali in some respects the way he carries himself on the field

I too like the way AJG plays.
I saw him in a couple of non first team games and in his first team cameos.
He does seem to have something about him and he is up for the rough stuff as well.

Trouble is guys, the rougher stuff is being eradicated from the game. Whilst being strong or brave is an advantage, there's a line where refs will punish you for anything that looks half dangerous.

Just look at our yellow cards yesterday. It was hardly a dirty game.

Incompetent refereeing though, that. He gave out 4 or 5 yellow cards that just weren't at all cautionable offences.

I’d love to know why he booked Butler!
