Gary McAllister and assistant were in the stand to watch us demolish Southend and their faces were a picture.
I think that they lacked the self-belief that they could really beat us. We had outplayed them in both league games even though we lost as to them at home.
That game at Elland Road was a master class by Rovers.

If we had Billy sharp that 1st season in the Championship we would have finished in the top 6 imo.
SOD did make a mistake with Heffs as proved at Forest on Boxing Day and in 2nd half of the season.
Think he had not forgiven him for getting sent off at Southend.

We were the joint lowest scorers that 2008/9 season with 42, less than a goal a game. Interestingly our fellow toothless tigers were QPR who finished above us. Mystifyingly the sixth lowest scorers were Birmingham City who went up automatically.

It was only the first half of the season that we struggled in front of goal. 11 goals in the first 24 matches, while O'Driscoll determinedly ignored the one out and out goal scorer he had in his squad.

Second half of the season, Heffernan was the second highest goalscorer in the Championship. And O'Driscoll STILL dropped him towards the end of the season when it looked like we were safe. Very strange dynamic there.

My memory of Heffs was he was generally about a 1 in 3 striker but he felt more of a threat than that.

It's strange because Heffs on paper was a textbook SOD player. He was highly intelligent and terrific off the ball in terms of his positioning, and a technically excellent finisher. He was one of those players who you wouldn't notice until he popped up in just the right place to score. There must have been some other reason SOD never took to him.

The fact he was a serial pisshead probably put him off.

10 in 19 starts he got, that 08/09 season. That must be our best rate of return at Tier 2 since the days of Alick Jeffrey.

Team needs a solid spine. 2 solid reliable centre half’s . 2 solid midfielders and a Sutton shearer esq partnership up front.
Please.
