This is not a critical post it’s merely an observation - we’ve got very good technically gifted, creative players in midfield like Bostock, Close, Smith and Galbraith who I thought was really good today add to that Tommy Rowe we’re really well stocked in midfield in terms of quality - that being said there’s also a big argument for horses for courses & by that I mean play genuine league one footballers and that brings into the equation Gardner, a player who’s not as gifted as some of the above but is probably more suited to the robust nature of the division.

Wellens was clear that he wanted to recruit a physical presence in the defensive midfield role earlier in the summer.

After we’d finished adding to the backline he stated was wanting a goalkeeper, a defensive midfield player and a some forwards (including a permanent and some loanees in the forward positions). We brought in Hiwula, then all of a sudden the picture seemed to change. We could only loan a goalkeeper if we wanted a defensive midfield player. So we loaned a keeper, but then that was it. So I think we can assume that the defensive midfield player will now be part of phase 2 of the rebuild next summer, but Wellens not blind to it.
