Quiz Question
« on August 04, 2022, 08:24:04 pm by Dutch Uncle »
Just to distract from injuries, suspensions, blame-throwing,......

(1) In 1904-05 we lost every away league match. There was one other football league season season when we did not win a league match outside of Yorkshire.

(2) There has only been one league season in our history when we had the combination of both:
        - Winning more matches away from home than away defeats and
        - Losing more home matches than home victories

Question: Who was manager for both of these seasons?

Edit: For clarification it was much much later than 1904-05

First couple of clues:

The seasons are within memory of most people on this board

The season with no win outside of Yorkshire saw us with league wins at Hillsborough and Elland Road

Dean Saunders

Sensible guess, and certainly in 2012-13 our away form (W15 D4 L4) was much better than our home form but we did (just) manage to win more at home than lose (W10 D5 L8), so no cigar.

Season we were relegated, Dean Saunders. Other than that, I would have said Peter Doherty.

In the experiment season under Saunders we won two away matches - at Peterborough and Nottm Forest, so no.

Both seasons concerned were under the same manager and much more recent than Doherty.

Season we won more away than we lost and lost more at home than we won must have been 2014/15
If we had the same manager for both season you are talking about then the manager must be Paul Dickov.

Billy Bremner.

Billy certainly had the most seasons to choose from, but no. Campsall above has identified one of the seasons concerned so the manager should now be straightforward.

Bingo

In the 2014-15 season after relegation from the Championship we finished 13th in League One with a home record of W7 D6 L10 and an away record of W9 D7 L7. This 'negative' home record combined with 'positive' away record is a fairly unusual occurrence and over the last 60 years on average once every two years one team out of the 92 manages it. But the frequency is definitely increasing with time.

I just thought is was weird that in the 2 seasons PD was manager, that although the football was often far from memorable, nevertheless they were both unique in Rovers history so far.
