The Memorial Garden - Help required - IRWT
« on November 17, 2023, 05:20:28 pm by silent majority »
Some of you may be aware that the memorial garden at the stadium is now full, and has been for a while.

I have spoken to a few individuals who would love to have their relatives memorialised but now can't, and currently we don't have a solution. I've spoken to the club at length about alternatives, and that has varied in type and location. Ideally we would like to increase the size and possible location, but this is extremely difficult when trying to finalise this. The club have promised they will help where they can, and I can guarantee that the VSC will also.

What I'm asking for today is a few volunteers who think they could help me and the club to find the right solution for now and possibly well into the future. I can assure you it won't be time demanding on our part, so don't worry about that, its more about ideas and a willingness to share those ideas with a few other DRFC supporters.

You can respond on here, or use the DM service, I'll be happy either way.

There are other patches of grass near the stadium which could be manicured into a decent sward, all it takes then is somebody to build a small wall round it and for very small memorial stones to be placed inside, just 6x4" pieces of marble, suitably inscribed. An oblong 25' x15 could house 2250 such small plaques. Just an idea.

Could we have special memorial bricks, similar to the ones already present on the stadium exterior walls?

..... Or maybe our lost ones' names on the pavements, Hollywood style?

A memorial wall with gardens and maybe small pond/water feature included might be an idea - it could be added to as needed and would make a great area where folk could walk sit and reflect..... I go to the IBCC a few times a year and love its' peaceful gardens and love the Wall of Names feature and Peace Gardens..

I was just thinking the same. The area between car park 1 and Alick Jeffrey Way (next to the bike shed) where the perimeter hedge sometimes gets overgrown, could be ripe for re-purposing.

How about memorial tree-planting - true ‘eco power’. Maybe on some of the green space near the lake. Probably all sorts of issues to consider like vandalism and the cost of maintenance. Maybe fence off an area for re-wilding and just leave it to nature.

I think I remember seeing something similar at the National Arboretum where some new additions had small notices attached. Perhaps a cluster of DRFC saplings would eventually form a ‘copse’ (sorry!).

Like many people I’ve got a brick in the stadium and that was a great idea. But something positive for the planet that could grow for a very long time with its roots in Doncaster soil might be a nice idea.

Be nice if the Club can sort something, I’m Rovers after death , not just “Rovers till I die”
