I thought Mikautadze who scored the penalty was the real heartbeat of the side.

Always loved these tournaments, where players you've never heard of smash their way out of your TV screen and into your consciousness.

First ones for me were Lato and Szarmach for Poland in WC 74.

There's always been one or two who've done that, every tournament since.

Very good from Georgia brilliant first goal and a penalty that was made the most of. The incentive was there as they were bottom of the group and Portugal played their second team. But their skill and enthusiasm was good.

Does an England team take to the field (maybe like Billy Wright, Stanley Matthews etc., did in the 50s) going out to win to maintain the honour of the country?

In so many of the smaller nations National pride seems to be a real motivator. My mother used to tell me that we were very lucky to be English which was perhaps a somewhat sheltered view even 70 or 80 years ago, but perhaps we had justification in such pride (if that’s the right word) back then.

Georgia has a long-term struggle to assert its nationhood and a therefore an absolute need to maintain its self belief. And it very obvious that this drives the support and motivates success on the football field.

This seems in sharp contrast with a disunited country like ours, riven with discontent over values, failing public services, governing politicians of dubious integrity, corruption and anti monarchists.

So do we have any reference points in our national, conscience to unite us - players and ALL fans - and be genuinely inspired with nationalistic fervour?

Some would firmly conclude that we have not.

Yes Alan while our very own England have been involved in the worst. Some can try & paper over the cracks as they like, but it's there for all to see, we have been utter dross.

Topped their group, in the last 16, runners up last time round, not surprising they’re all struggling to perform with all the negativity they get hurled at them.

In fairness to England the games have been bland mainly because the sides we have played have been very defensive with at least two banks of four sometimes five in mid field and have not themselves tried to make the games  a spectacle.
  Yes we could have been better at breaking them down, but the main difference has been other groups have had games that were a lot more open and teams better matched to try and win a game, we have not faced a team that has done that, from the first minute they have played not to lose.
 It could be very different now in the knock out stages, and more open play, teams at least should now show some attacking intent which we can exploit.

All teams have struggled against good defensively organised teams, look at Portugal, Belgium, France.

Great half of football, Georgia brilliant on the break & so well organised, Spain are a delight to watch. Like chalk & cheese to the garbage football I have watched England produce.

It's great that we've progressed, but we have still played sh!te, negative or not, slow, lethargic, boring, negative football, that's what I've seen from watching England.
