Sky Sports 1 has just done a cemeo on former Villa & Burnley striker Andy Lockhead. I recall he scored a hat trick with his head at Bell Vue against Rovers. Can`t remember when (some time in the 60s)or which cup competition. Was any one else there that day, with a better memory than me ?

League Cup second round, in our championship 1965-6 season I think. We beat Barnsley in a replay at Oakwell to get there.

Largest crowd I was ever in at Belle Vue - 24988

I remember we were totally outclassed - Burnley were a good Division 1 side in those days - but didn't remember that Lochhead's hattrick was all headers. He was a class act.

Yes he was a class act. I may be wrong about them all being headers, it was a long time ago, but that is how I remember it.

He certainly was playing for Villa that one season they had in the 3rd Division. I think he scored against us at their place but we, bizarrely and unexpectedly went and won. I know we won 2-0 (or possibly 2-1) at BV. Bald headed coot he was by then. Not very big. was that about 72 or 73?

Cheers

Hi guys

The season was 65/66 when Rovers played Burnley in the League Cup.

They played Barnsley in the previous round and had Alick Jeffrey carried of on a stretcher after 20 minutes. Barnsley were 2 up after 55 mins. Trevor Ogden scored for Rovers 18 mins from time and with less than a minute left he scored from a header after an Albert Broadbent centre. There was a crowd of 14,307 at the game.

The following week at Oakwell Rovers secured a 2-1 victory with goals from Broadbent (Pen) & Phil Robinson.

The game against Burnley was delayed for 5 minutes to allow many of the fans to get in and a crowd of 24,988 attended the game.

Lochhead did in fact score three goals  and Burnley won 4-0 (all the goals were scored in the first half). Up till 5 minutes before half time Burnley led by 1 goal but then scored 3 quick goals to lead 4-0.

Lochheads goals were 2 headers and although he got his head to the ball somehow Potter stopped it going into goal but could only deflect the ball towards Lochhead who was sprawled on the pitch and he stuck out a foot to score his second.

I remember the game well. It was the first time I had every stood on the \"pop side\" and being the superstisious sort of a guy that I am it was many years before I stood over on that side again.

Regards

Ray
