The whole billy sharp saga!
« on March 24, 2010, 12:14:23 am by donnygreenjeans »
After reading a few posts on here about the possibility of signing billy sharp i don't think we will and here's the reasons why...................

1. IMO, I don't think the rovers will pay the £1.5 million asking price or a price close to that even though they know what he can do.

2. I am guessing that even though he likes/loves it here he believes he can still do a job for Sheff Utd and he is a big Sheff Utd fan.

3. (Again i'm guessing) but his weekly wage at Sheff Utd is quite a lot and is beyond what the rovers can afford, i don't think the rovers will break their wage structure to sign him and for him to sign for us (apart from us paying a big fee) he will have to take a wage cut, which i don't think he would, put yourself in his shoes, would you?

4. Finally, he's hoping that Blackwell, by what ever means loses his job at Sheff Utd and then he can revive his Sheff Utd career.

I hope that i'm wrong but deep down i know we wont sign him.

I would fully understand if BS wanted to stay at Sheff Utd next season, as I would understand if he ended up moving to a big club with money like Forest or Middlesbrough because there isn't much we can do about that. We can't compete with these clubs. I would however be very disappointed if he ended up at Barnsley or similar because that would mean that he was in our reach but we didn't want to pay the money. And if Barnsley could afford him then surely we could've pushed the boat out to get him without paying daft money.

would i want £600k a year to sit on somebodies bench and let my career go stagnant, or £350-400k a year and flourish in a side where i can be the top scorer in the league? yes, you're damn right i would take a pay cut.

This is one of the few points I think we have in our favour of signing him permanently.

I think Billy has integrity, loves to play, loves to be loved and loves the fact that he can miss chances / not score and still have his name chanted by the fans.

Like youve said, I reckon the money would not be the over riding facor, as long as he isnt bench warming - which would likely be the case at 'bigger' clubs.

Thing is though, he obviously has an Agent - and we all know that its the ££ signs that flash in front of their eyes.

Didn't DRFC AGREE a transfer fee prior to season starting.
Aren't DRFC paying ALL BS wages.

The two together appear to be too much for DRFC .

If BS agrees a lesser salary, and the asking price remains the same, i think he is KMS Bound. Time will tell.

If he goes Barnsley it doesnt mean he was in our reach, clubs sometimes do silly things to push that boat out and put the club in jeapordy. As much as i would love to see Sharp here permanetley it MUST not be at the risk of this club..I can remember once waiting by the radio waiting to hear wether the taxmen had won the court case to wind us up and secondely walking to belle vue behind the famous coffin and they were deperate times..
So if we can afford him within a budget absolutely brilliant,if we cant then so be it.........

Barnsley are a well run club now. They have a wage structure and kept to it when they rejected Jamie Ward when he asked for too much money. Their wage budget can't be too much higher than ours on their crowds and considering the good players they already have. If Billy goes to Barnsley then I will be disappointed. I'm not calling for mindless spending here, we are apparently paying all his wages now aren't we? If he keeps up scoring like he has been doing (which would be very likely) then we could cash in for huge money in a season or two. If he goes to a big club in the summer then fair enough, we can't do much about that and the money involved would be too high for us.

I think many footballers are going to be disappointed by their new contract offers due to the times we live in.  An example is Joe Cole who has just learned that if he want to stay at Chelsea, he takes a 40% pay cut.  Cole's reaction has been to put himself on the market.

This will happen to many players in the close season.  Billy Sharp's performances for us have been awesome, and will probably mean that he may be able to hold out for a deal.  But in any case, I can see there being some bargains available over the summer.
