dont know if this subject has been mentioned before if so sorry for digging up
olde ground.

been told from a mate that his mate was told by a somebody with conections to drfc
'to which that is as far as i will go on that'

as the connection from mate to mate to rovers club fits in for me

the connection to rovers apprantly said 'rovers can not afford promotion this season'
hence to say they will not be going for play offs

please dont ask for 'soruce' as it's hear say from my part.

but should the above be true i fully understand.

it type of pissed me mate off to extent he will not go to barnsley this weekend,but will carry on going to home games since he had season ticket.

what knocks me back that old second world war poster 'loose lips sink ships'
when i take into account who the info came from.

dont know if iam making a mountian out of a mole hill as i say deep down
some rovers fans will allready have said to them sens the above.

Ignoring whether anybody of importance has actually made that statement or not, there are two ways you can look at it.

1) Rovers cannot afford to gamble on extra loan signings this season to help with chasing the play-offs.

2) Rovers cannot afford to get promotion.

I'd agree with the 1st one - JR&co & SOD are running a very tight ship with the budget for signings and wages and are obviously not prepared to compromise their principles. Looks to be a good policy when all around are going tits up.

Re the 2nd theory, i don't agree. If for some reason Rovers poxed their way into the play-offs (this season or any other) and managed to get promotion via a couple of dubious penalties or whatever, do you think they'd care that they couldn't afford to compete on an equal basis? Course they wouldn't care! They'd play the season out, pocket the £20+ million parachute money and get relegated to the Championship well set up for another crack it in a season's time.

Sounds like rubbish to me Oslo.

How would the play-offs disadvantage Rovers financially? The play-off final is the richest game in football, it would secure the club financially rather than anything else.

JR has said he wants to try and push Rovers that next step, if he could take it now he'd grab it with both hands. Promotion would represent our best hope of keeping Billy Sharp as well.

Surely if we made the play offs we would still be underdogs but how much extra gate money would we earn. The best scenario if we couldn't afford promotion would be to end up narrowly beaten finalists. That would be a winner,loads of extra money and raise our profile even higher and increasing season ticket sales,. :cheer:

all depends on how you interpret the 'quote'

we can not afford the play-offs

a) to ensure that we would beat Sheff U, Newcastle, West Brom & Swansea (all of which we would realistically have had to do) we would need to sign Rooney and Drogba among others - ie too expensive

b) we dont want to go up this season as that means missing out on our championship charge next year

i cant really put up any 'FACTS' in this case as iam going off 'hear say'

i can say for sure thou that the 'mate to mate to rovers connection' is bang on
as the 'mate to rovers connnection' i have seen both together on more than enough occasions via whatever reason.

what knocks me out of me stride is what the rovers conection said to 'mate'
apparantly,to which i cant think for life of me why 'mate' would come out with such statement as for long as i have known  he/she is not that type of person.

on other hand as mutley said 'if rovers poxed their way into play offs' it's got to be extra money into the bank.

but i did say that 'rovers can not afford promotion' not 'play offs'

With regard  to your insider info, i would imagine that attitude would go down like a whore in a nunnery in the upper echelons of the clubs boardroom.

It's not what JR requires from the club after he has emptied his wallet into it for so long.

when people say we cant afford to get promotion....do they mean we cant afford to compete next year? if so then i totally agree, but that in itself is not a reason to not go for it.

think about what sod said a couple of weeks ago about \"taking the money and running\"...essentially meaning, we go up, we dont really strengthen the squad that much, we bank a shed load of money, get battered (with a full house every week) and come back down with somewhere between 20 and 40 million quid extra in the bank, still with NO DEBT, and making us a very rich championship club. i fail to see how this could be a bad thing...and of course we'd cause some upset along the way.

i dont think we'd ever hear \"pub team avin a laugh\" as loud as it would be in the prem, as we would be a massive irritant to the \"big clubs\"...i'd love every second of it.

regarding the playoffs, IIRC money from the final is 40% of the takings, guestimates tell me that means about 1-1.5 million in the bank just from the P/O Final...that would be....nice. haha.

i will addmit that r lass will proof read any important paper work
i have to offer anybody that i have written in english,to check my spelling
etc etc.

not that iam handing paper work over that often,but r lasses english is a lot better
than mine by a country mile and she is a noggy

Superspy - not sure if I understood your post above quite right? I think I'm right in saying that the loser of the Cmhampionship final takes the entire gate proceeds? The argument being that the winning team gets the 40 pieces of Premiership silver.

it may well be that mate, im just going off what i was told around the time we played the league 1 final, which was that the money was split 40/40/20 (with the 20 going to the FA). i just assumed it was the same for the championship p/o
