Who`s concerned?
« on May 26, 2010, 04:28:57 pm by Filo »
With Oster, Hayter and Wilson yet to sign a new deal, Roberts that rejected a new deal and our first and second choice centre back targets choosing to go elsewhere even though they knew they would fit in here, at this moment in time it`s not looking good for our squad is it?

I'm not concerned at all, did you really expect Ward to sign for us when SOD already said that there were other high-profile clubs in for him? Especially with his high wage demands.

We still have 4 centre backs (including Jimmy) so i dont see no need to worry.

SOD said that he was confident with Oster, Hayter and Wilson to sign by the end of the week. It's just a case of patience really - the playoffs haven't even finished yet! However, i can see at least one (probably Oster) getting higher wages elsewhere.

Even if we lost all 3 SOD will just bring in a replacement, as he has done time and time again. In SOD we trust.

We have all ready been told we are in a mini crisis but no body believes it

It's very early days yet, the current season still hasn't finished and anyone that admits to being \"concerned\" will undoubtedly invite the public scorn of many on here. Of course we are fortunate to be where we are - playing in the Championship in a new stadium, with a Chairman that loves the club and has achieved miracles. We have no sign of a benefactor trying to burn the ground down or bury the football club, and to have come through those times we will always be lucky.

However, at least in my view, it is the nature of a supporter to be competitive. Anyone with these instincts has an inbuilt desire to see the club perform at the highest level possible, with the best players possible, it is the mindset of a football fan to (dare to) dream.

Some people are not bothered at all about who we sign or what level we're playing at, and they're entitled to their opinion, but when you look around at the passion throughout the game, the thousands of pounds spent following it and the time spent reading, talking and typing about it, I think such a view is possibly a minority. I would watch us in the Unibond, but I'd rather watch us in the Championship, I watched us with Darren Esdaille but I'd rather it was John Oster, and I'd rather we won than lost.

I think people can be forgiven for being \"concerned,\" purely out of their human instincts. The mockers will say it is immaturity or impatience, maybe there is an element of that in it, but far more of it stems from desire to see our team win and be the best, and I don't think there is anything to be criticised there. 'Dare to dream' is the strapline, \"dare\" seems to be the operative word.

Trust in SO'D, of course - he's (arguably?) the best manager we've ever had. Trust in JR - it would be ridiculous not to given what we've achieved under his stewardship. But is it the instinctive reaction to be entirely content when we have lost important targets and contributers to our rivals? I don't think it is, no. These are people that our brilliant manager identified as players to build on the success of the club, so the fact that he hasn't been able to secure them is undoubtedly a blow. The squad we had last season (albeit in no small part due to loans) was very close to one that could challenge for the play offs, it would be a shame to rip that up and start again while our competitors pick off the fruits.

I am a little concerned, and until we get some good news to counter-balance the players that we are not managing to sign, then I will remain so. Not because I'm an immature or impatient idiot, but because as a supporter and a fan, I want to see the club do as well as we can.

I think some fans got ideas above where we are.  THinking we can compete with a club who has 20,000 season ticket holders and had the highest average crowds in league one last season is a bit naive really.  We cannot and we shouldn't really lose sleep when we miss out to these kind of clubs.  It won't change until we have a bigger fan base, that's the bottom line, our income is way less than theirs.

Even then we still already have 4 centre backs, it's up front that worries me.

It's the 26th May, the season for our division only finished 4 days ago. As John Ryan said, the time to worry is August 7th, which I sincerely doubt we'll be doing.

Completely agree Jonathan, another good post.

I think that everyone is a passionate supporter, heck im checking the OS god knows how many times a day in hope of good news. I'm personally gutted that we've lost out on Shackell and Ward, however im still not concerned, or even surprised.

The main reason im not concerned is the timescale. We have approximately 10 weeks to assemble a squad, a lot is going to happen in that time. Furthermore, the fact that Shackell and Ward are out of the picture early gives us more time to move onto other transfer targets.

Imagine if this had dragged on all summer (us playing the slowly, softly approach) and then they left - leaving us with a week to dig around for scraps?

Furthermore, whilst it is fun to speculate on the forum, no matter how ''concerned'' we are we can't influence what we do in the transfer market leaving us no choice but to sit and wait.

Excellent post,Jon. It does, I would imagine, sum up the feelings of most of the posters on this forum.
For the record, I'm not overly concerned or surprised about losing out on Ward or Shackell, although it would have been great to have either of them in our squad for next season. I imagine there will be some more disappointing news between now and August but I'm confident that we will be bring in enough quality to remain competitive. A new deal for Oster would be an excellent start.

Bang on the money....well said! Blackpool have, for me, proved the null hypothesis and have shown that there is another strategy other than osterity, prudent spending and having the b*llocks to go for it and even with a relegation season next year, the rewards from this season should see them safe and secure for a good few years now!
