Just read in the star...

that SoD wants Josh Payne on a short term contract. I have all the faith in sean but this is a player that went through west hams youth system and has looked impressive in pre season, the kid isnt no fool. This is the type of player that should be getting 3 - 4 year contract and help build the squad.

Thoughts..?

I think we may find Josh will sign a short term contract in the interim ( 6 months )

From what ive heard he is a good player, and i agree with you that we should be getting him on a longer contract becauses he is at a young age.

In the couple of games so far I've not really seen much that shows him as different to Mark Wilson, pretty similar I'd say.  Still only saw him at Askern and Solihull, need to see more of him really.  No doubt the injuries to Wilson and Oster mean a deal is more likely.

on the DROS aswell, but if he does sign 6 months, i can see him leaving for a another club in jan when other clubs see his quality :-/. but hopefully he signs a longer on and helps rovers in the long run.

He's been rejected by West Ham, then you want us to give him a 4 yr deal. There is only about 15 or so places between us and the Hammers.

I hear you though, and I would give him a 6 month deal. Let's see how he plays in our system and let's see if he can play footy ala W Ham and DRFC in a very good league and to a very high standard.

If he does it, then we offer him 2-3 yrs. If he cannot hack it or improve the team, then he's gone in January.

I would suggest that this is actually happening, it's just a case of if another club is offering him 1-2 years now.....and you can't blame the lad for looking at that option. The option from Donny is that he is likely to get some first team experience (with our current situation), the option from others might be a longer contract, but it might be as a squad player only.

i totally agree with you there, but to even get through the WH system you must have some talent. SoD really does seem to want him so if another club of 1-2 years, do you think that SoD would also up his offer.

Rigoglioso came through the Liverpool youth system, and he was hardly a world beater was he?

Spicer was part of The Arsenal, and he couldn't make it here.

Maybe Sean can't offer a longer deal as his budget is tied up with other signings that we have not made public yet. ;)

There's nothing wrong with offering him 6 months, we can see if he's any good and if not in that time he goes for nothing. Better that than paying him off to the tune of 4 years wages by signing him to a massive contract.

Plus, remembr that we had Oster for only 6 months originally and that worked out pretty well!

Precisely the point I was going to make, RA. If he's shite, we don't lose much. If he's the next John Oster we offer him an extension. Good business.
