To get England to play like Spain we need…

A feeder team based in the championship or league 1 that has UK players ‘only’ in it. Here, “total football” would be the mantra and the raison d’etre. Premiership clubs could ‘season loan’ their young talent to this team (a young Oxlaide etc). The FA’s Burton project could also add players to this squad.

It could be a new club or perhaps an existing one. Maybe a sleeping giant that have fallen on hard times?

Either way, it would be a way of nurturing and growing our young talent to play a similar way to the Spanish. If the team got promoted to the premiership the country and neutrals would get behind them. Even Sky would be pleased because it would increase subscriptions.

Its radical, but we have to do something radical if we are ever going to see England win anything again? We are miles away at the moment.

Well spotted! I just put UK players because some of the younger ones coming through the Burton scheme may still be undecided about their country ALA Greenie, whoe's great great uncle once had a pint of guiness ;-)

This would open the door for Man Utd/City and other prem clubs to have competetive B and C teams who would be barred from promotion but take up several places in the lower divisions, as much as I wish to see a competetive National side I don't think that this would be the way to achieve it. We need more grass roots level coaches who are UEFA standard. Clubs should run courses and get local people who are or wish to be involved on them. If these people are teaching the youngsters to play that way before the Clubs poach them it will make things progress more quickly.
What ever the answer it isn't going to be a quick fix.

It isn't even really legal to do an 'English only' team, but then again Athletic Bilbao play with only Basque players and it's allowed, so who knows if there'd be a fuss over it or not.
