Interesting point on Paynter
« on August 13, 2012, 09:42:10 pm by Chris Black come back »
Not only did we take him from a Championship team and hence must be paying him fairly decent wages, but we apparently also paid a fee. Can't remember that many times in last couple of years when we have paid a fee for anyone. Sharp and Bennett are only two I can really recall recently.

Good call that man. Think going back we also (unbelievably) paid a fee for Martis.

Leeds blog reckons no fee was paid as his contact was cancelled, like McCombe with Huddersfield;

Who knows?

Two more in the same timeframe you may have forgotten are Byron Webster (ca 100K) and believe it or not Steve Brooker (maybe ca 50K with add-ons which presumably did not come to pass)

BBC Sport says "Doncaster Rovers have signed Leeds United striker Billy Paynter for an undisclosed fee" but that is as much as we are getting. Leeds signed him on a free when his contract at Swindon expired so perhaps they factored that in to the pricing. God knows.

I'm not sure, I think quite a few of our transfers involved nominal fees, but we've never been big spenders, historically. Sharp is the only one who we paid big money for. Even £300k for Mills is a drop in the ocean for even Championship clubs these days.

Considering they seemed to want Paynter off the wage bill I doubt we paid much for him if we paid anything at all.

Im absolutely amazed we thought Byron Webster was worth 100k.

f**king hell, I completely forgot about that one. SO'D must have seen something nobody else did there.

I think Ameobi was a loan signing if I remember rightly.  Souza was on a months contract or something similar.  Don't know about Woods.

Sorry, point was about SOD signing dodgy players. Think Ameobi was signed on a one year deal but released earlier. He is now playing football in the Icelandic league.

Well covered for a physical presence up there with Brown&Paynter, could do with a smaller quick player upfront, are any of the youth team strikers ready to step up or would we need to bring another in?

Byron Webster against notts county in the league cup was absolutely immense - just a shame he never performed like that again!

I seem to remember they released him (slightly) early in order to be able to sign for us. Seen as a nice gesture at the time and I'd still hold to that.

He picked up a dislocated shoulder or elbow, I think.

Compared to what we paid for Rigogliosio seems like shrewd business

Webster looked a good prospect when he joined us.  He was young and raw , but looked positionally good (as he demonstrated in some of the games mentioned in this thread) and had good pedigree, but it never went further than that.  To be honest, if he had stepped up and become the next Matt Mills we would have all been saying what a great bit of business £100k was.

Some you win, and some you lose.  Thats numberwang.

Is Webster still at Yeovil? If so what odds against him having a blinder against us in a couple of weeks time?

Webster was looking ood until Chris Morgan pulled him back so hard that he hyperextended his elbow. Didn't the referee bizarrely book him earlier on in the game after a similar Morgan "challenge".

After that he never really got another chance in the the team. Certainly not the worst centre half we've had in recent years. Far better than the likes of Souza and Fenton!
