Good lad, probably one of the best midfielders we ever had.

Agreed,
Wilson knew what his job was, what it entailed and the important role it played in the bigger picture. He did what was asked of him and IMO the team of the time were a better unit with him in it rather than out.

Rather have him in our midfield then Keegan or Harper, and that statement alone says a lot!!!!

Don't rate Keegan or harper but not having it that Wilson is better.
The way we played under sod made midfielders look good, always had options and space, good footballers all around them.
Wilson wouldn't make us a better side now

But would not make us any worse.  He was a good footballer as SOD recognised.

If he is such a good footballer why is he playing at Gainsborough?

Because he's 34 in a months time.

Thats why you are no longer singing Donny, age catches up with you.  Rathjer have Mark Wilson than any of our midfielders but time moves on.

He was twice as good as any we have now that's for sure.

All about opinions. We seem to have been agreeing a fair bit recently but nobody will ever convince me Wilson was any good. He was no good when Dave Penney signed him and never got any better. In my opinion of course ;-)

You can't use his age as a reason he is where he is. He's 33 ffs not 43.

Can see why the fans never took to him as SCWK says, he was steady, and did all the less glamorous jobs. Or did he? I'm really trying and I can barely remember anything about him, apart from that goal vs Derby. He was the definition of average, so average I can barely muster a good or bad memory about him. We always seemed to do alright when he was in the team though so he can't have been that awful.

Apparently he broke things up but I obviously missed that. It's quite telling when the most common description of him is that he is a 'nice bloke'. Hear that a lot about him.

I'm sure he is by the way but its no reason to judge a footballer.

My one lasting memory of him is when he tried to overhead kick the ball back down the pitch and instead he smashed it into his face and it went spinning into touch.

Funny RedJ, I seem to recall Martin Woods doing that and not so long back either, did both incidents happen or are one of us mixed up?

I actually liked Mark Wilson and thought he was underrated while here. Was he the best midfielder to play for our club? Hell no, he wasn't the most technically gifted player and he didn't have much luck in front of goal either (my last memory of him is hitting the post late on against Leeds in the Carling Cup), but as far as anchormen go he did his job pretty well when asked.

His best run in the side came in the 09/10 season and considering that we had lost Wellens in the summer and Stock was spending most of his time in the Physio room he didn't do that bad to say he was part of the Midfield that helped us achieve what is probably our highest position in English football (considering how much more competitive football has come since the 50's). Averaging over 20 games a season over 6 years (4 of which were in the Championship) isn't bad for someone who wasn't everyone's first choice Centre Mid.

Here is a good video on Youtube, a montage of probably his bets moments caught on camera. Admittedly a lot of it is him in the MUFC reserves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgPDm9eELv8

What puzzled me about Wilson was how on earth he made it to Man Utd, which must have the most scrupulous and rigorous youth set up on the planet. Don't get me wrong, Wilson was a solid Championship player (which in itself is no mean achievement given this is probably fifth strongest league in all of Europe) but there was no obvious talent which you could have imagined been spotted at 14 by Man Utd scouts - no tricky skills, no insightful passing, no rocket shot. Diligent, hard working, honest but not a stand out player.

Its a puzzlement, he always seemed ordinary to me albeit completely undeserving of the criticism he got on here for not being Brian Stock and like you I wonder how he stood out enough to get picked up by Man U and how he stayed there so long in what was at the time a youth system churning out top flight players. Also, he had a significant number of England U21 caps too I believe. Players can stall in development or maybe look good as youths playing against inferior players. However he got to Man U, I can assure you both him and Wellens were very highly thought of there. Also Schteeeve McLaren worked with him at Man U and then forked out a seven figure fee to take him to Boro didn't he? Again, he impressed a significant number of people it seems.

Just rarely us ;)

That number of u21 caps you were struggling to remember was 1 (one).

His career is bizarre though. Despite playing for a total of 12 clubs in the UK, he never made more than 18 games for a single club apart from us (an unbelievable 143 games for Rovers).
