Best ever Rovers strike partnership

In a nutshell, Alick Jeffrey and Laurie Sheffield.

Unless of course you know better!  ;)

I'd go along with that. Tremendous double act and made a young boy really happy, but then I thought we would always be that good, I didn't bank on the next 30 years or so being mostly rubbish.

Totally agree - 50 league goals in a season between them says it all. The only semi-challengers in my lifetime were Kitchen & O'Callaghan, and they had Ian Miller to feed from. In terms of actual class Sharp & Hayter wasn't a bad combo IMHO, and some of our current pairings are decent as well.

Rovers record for pair is 66 league goals in a season shared by Clarrie Jordan and Paul Todd in 1946-7.

Amazing how much 1946-7 is cropping up this season. Shows how well we are doing.

Ironically, im too young for Sheffield / Jeffrey but my Dad worships them.

In my time, since 1968 its Kitchen and Big Bren !

For me it's Bruno Jones and Jonny Muir, although it was short lived.

As a young un I haven't really seen many truly great old-fashioned strike partnerships. We've had a few good goalscorers in my time but never really any iconic partnerships. Brown and Blundell, maybe? Heffernan and Hayter? Sharp and Diouf always looked good but was too short-lived. The old-fashioned Shearer and Sheringham style partnership is dying out really, with managers playing one striker in behind a target man these days.

Brown and Blundell was probably the most effective strike partnership I ever saw us have.

Can you have a front 2 in a 2 - 3 - 5 Dutch? splitting hairs I know.

In my time since 1974 its got to be Kitchen and O'Callaghan - especially with Kitch's speciality overhead bicycle kick seen quite regularly.

'Pair' was meant to refer to any 2 players, but I take your point. They were at least a centre-forward and inside-forward

Short lived but Blundell and Bayo for me. Whilst not prolific I always thought Kirkwood and Duerden were on a close wavelength.

I am sure the Statisticians  on here could tell us, but how many times have two of the clubs strikers  scored double figures in a season, especially in the last 30 years.

I am struggling to think of many.

Ernie Moss and Colin Douglas
Leo Fortune West and Greg Blundell
James Hayter and Billy Sharp

You may mock but Heffs and Guy were quite effective for a season or so.

For those who were not able to see Alick and Laurie, I feel sorry for you. Secondly I feel more sorry for those of us who did, because we are all a lot nearer that big ground in the sky than you are.

As they say there is always a silver lining to everything.

Kitchen/O'Callaghan.

Did Billy Sharp have a partnership with anyone really? He was usually a lone ranger. I'd I have liked to see him playing now with Brown or Paynter.

Agree with both of the above but too short term to count I'd think. We would have stayed up last season with the top pair

Would we really have stopped up? We may have scored more, but it was our defensive frailties that really let us down last season. Either way, it's pretty immaterial now.

I can only go back to the 80's but think we would have won promotion with the Jones/Muir partnership before Jones' altercation and neck injury

This one is a bit out there but what about JJ and Heffernan.  Always thought they had a good understanding.  They were pretty good in our JPT season

Bit of a late reply I know, but I am half way round the world!
Best strike partnership (I've seen) - no question - Sheffield and Jeffrey. Deadly.
Best 3 players I've seen in a Rovers shirt -
                         1. Alick Jeffrey
                         2. George Best if Testimonials count.
               if not  2. Ian Snodin
                         3. John Nicholson.

Many greats over the years like Peter Kitchen, Ian Miller, Tony Woodcock, Harold Wilcockson - I could pick a top 100 but
even after career threatening injuries Alick would still be head and shoulders above the rest. Wayne Rooney? You're havin' a laugh.

Best ever? - Maybe not but worthy of a mention.

Barney & Gill

(I'm another Kitch & Big Bren worshipper - simply fantastic)

Amen to that. Muir's first match in the JPT quarter final against Halifax was a phenomenon. He looked like a player from another planet. He absolutely bulldozed through the Halifax defence and hit the woodwork 3 times if my memory serves me.

Then the start of the 90/91 season was a joy to behold. Muir & Jones destroyed the opposition in the first 5 matches. I thought we were going to have the division sewn up by Xmas. I've never seen a partnership look as dominant as they were. Totally unplayable.

Even though we couldn't keep that form up, I'm convinced that we'd have got promoted that season if the two of them hadn't got serious injuries. I remember the feeling of gloom when Muir cracked his ankle at Northampton on a grizzle New Years Day and it started to sink in that the Goalscorers' Graveyard curse of OBV had hit again...
