I like the cut of Mr De Val's jib.

I read on another thread someone moaning that Mr De Val picks up bookings.  Well, I'd counter with we've been too nice for too long.  It's overdue we had someone in who has a strength and physicality who can break up opposition attacks.  If he attracts the odd yellow card along the way, and dare I say it, "takes one for the team" every now and again, then so be it.

Ask around teams from league 1 last year and you'll not find many describing us as nice, I think the term used was 'physical' implying dirty

Turned out lovely :) I just hope we sign Furman still!

It really is true, some people on this forum are never happy, unless they're moaning!

PS. Oldham were second in the dirty league! Definitley something to do with Dickov!  :P

There's a peculiarly virulent affliction in Yorkshire. It's called Optimismophobia.

It's most debilitating symptom is a refusal to ever see a positive outcome to any scenario.

Psychologists believe that it develops when hard-bitten people decide to protect themselves from disappointment by making the assumption that "It'll all end up f**king shite so why bother being hopeful?"

Examples of the worst kind of sufferer include numerous people who expounded at length on how Donny Rovers would a)get relegated in 2012/13, b)start off well but flatter to deceive and collapse late on or c) get relegated from the Championship in 13/14 anyroad so what's the f**king point?

The Optimismophobia Research Institute at University College London has two prize research samples, caught in the wild at Griffin Park in May this year. One was heard to ejaculate, "He'll f**king miss it! He's shite!" As Coppinger tapped in the winner. The other exclaimed, "Thee watch. Brentford'll get 2. Ahm telling thi! This defence is shite!"

The charity Campaign for Optimismophobia Care, Knowledge and Support (COCKS) says, "We would ask anyone who knows a sufferer to have patience and understanding of this horrendous affliction. Although we accept that they can come across as reight mardy t**ts who want a good f**king slap and be told to grow up."

Isn't that the hallmark of 'we're just a pub team having a laugh'?

I think it is, Martin.  There will be a lot of folks slowly nodding with a wry smile on their lips today when they read that and recognise themselves/people they know.

TDFs.  Dont you just love 'em?

Absolutely brilliant BST - made my day already

Now we all have to ask ourself the uncomfortable question - do we need support from COCKS or not?

Excellent posting there from m'learned BST and I would fully concur with everything he was written. Although I do think he might be underestimating the amount of optimistic Rover's fans there are, who might well be able to provide daily ongoing support to COCKS. I might be worthwhile the VSC having a role in helping these people come forward and get involved, sort of come out of the closet ' a COCK's Out Campaign' maybe?

I'm sure we could support COCKs out - though it may be hard initially.

There is a mathematical way of quantifying optimism in realtion to all sorts of things, so I thought it worth applying it to the conclusions of our Prof. StubbsTears.

Using the highly accurate google calculator:(number of results for "optimism" and "<location or team>") divided by  (number of results for a place or team)=Optimism Factor. Similar for Pessimism. Divide the Optimism Factor by the Pessimism Factor (O/P) and you have the Optimism Coefficient, the standard measure of Optimismophobia. The higher the number, the higher the optimism compared to pessimism.

Below is in order of optimismophobia relating to the town, but you can also see the optimism relating to the football club by comparison.

Leeds  0=0.022 P=0.122 O/P=0.18
Leeds United  0=0.056 P=0.221 O/P=0.25

Manchester  0=0.004 P=0.011 O/P=0.36
Manchester United  0=0.014 P=0.021 O/P=0.66

Bristol  0=0.006 P=0.011 O/P=0.55
Bristol Rovers  0=0.268 P=0.049 O/P=5.47

Colchester  0=0.068 P=0.041 O/P=1.66
Colchester United  0=0.172 P=0.028 O/P=6.14

Doncaster 0=0.075 P=0.034 O/P=2.21
Doncaster Rovers 0=0.230 P=0.050 O/P=4.60

Wolverhampton  0=0.100 P=0.038 O/P=2.63
Wolverhampton Wanderers  0=0.341 P=0.066 O/P=5.17

Barnsley 0=0.122 P=0.042 O/P=2.90
Barnsley F.C.  0=0.126 P=0.023 O/P=5.48

Rotherham 0=0.134 P=0.039 O/P=3.44
Rotherham United  0=0.171 P=0.029 O/P=5.90

Scunthorpe  0=0.185 P=0.035 O/P=5.29
Scunthorpe United  0=0.198 P=0.027 O/P=6.85

Sheffield O=0.096 P= 0.014 O/P=6.86
Sheffield Wednesday O=0.261 P=0.058 O/P=4.50
Sheffield United O=0.311 P=0.052 O/P=5.98

Some interesting results, with Donny coming in fair to middling all round. Not so pessimistic as you may think then?

It does seem that doctors in Bristol could do well by prescribing supporting a shite team to their pessimistic patients, and Prozac is preferred over sugar in the Elland Road coffee.
