Martin Woods (glass?)
« on January 30, 2014, 10:57:54 pm by WhiteyBFC »
Is he ok to still play football? I thought he was the fella that put Darren Anderton to shame for injuries.

What's he like, where's he play etc?

Absolutely bemused by this news, that he's training with us. But hey ho.

If you play him at left mid he'll be reasonable. I actually quite liked him when he played there for us. Unfortunately he was used as a centre mid sometimes, which didn't work as he has no right foot, and I'm not exaggerating, if you ever see him play a pass with his right more than 1 yard I'll be amazed. But yes, he has been plagued by injury, whether he's past that or not remains to be seen.

Injuries did mess him up for probably 2 seasons. But on the other hand, he's the only guy in a current thread to have two nominations for best ever goal. And they were both absolute peaches too. He's got the talent. He's got the experience too. He needs to be played in the right place , and to keep fit. He certainly does want to play.  He won't be a shirker. He's traipsed up and down this country and Scotland too trying to get a spot. And he went to Italy or America or somewhere, I believe at his own expense, to get to the bottom of his injury. I hope he makes it. Didn't inspire though before Christmas when he was here.....

Has a wand for a left peg, except strangely when taking free kicks (which always ended up in row Z).  As superspy said, never ever let him near centre midfield or feed him after midnight.

The lad's had Biblical injury problems. He deserves a break for sticking at it.

He showed enough when he was fit 4 years back to make it clear that he could be a decent Championship-level player. On his day, he waltzed through matches at this level. But his last performance for us was dreadful - demanding the ball in deep midfield against Stevenage in the Cup, then doing nowt but slowing down moves and playing safety-first sideways passes.

I really like the lad and if he could get back to where he was 4 years back, he'd walk into your team. Or ours. Or most in the bottom half of this division. Good luck to him. I'll be delighted if he steps up.

As long as your lot don't overtake us.

I'm glad this thread didn't go too much on the "he's shite" comments. The rest of the thread pretty much covered it - he's a decent player at this level if he is played in a left-mid position and can get a run of games. He has been unlucky. Let's be honest, repeat injuries is not his fault - he doesn't go out to get injured, he didn't choose to be injured. The lad wants to play and as BobG says, has done all he can at his own expense to get fit. That's a sign of a guy with determination, personal responsibility and confidence in his own abilities. I wish him well.

Well for me he's a long long way from the player we had....He has spent best part of two years injured and boy did it show when he returned...I'm sure he will get back to form but it will take a club with a lot of patience as theres no quick fix to him I don't think....We simply don't have the budget to carry players like him so we took the correct descision..

Good luck to the fella.

If he is paid per play, then okay. If not, he's simply not for value for money given his horrendous injury record.

I said he'd found his level last season.

When he scored against Bradford park avenue.

You can add an inability to beat the first man from corners to that. Don't think his left foot could be classed as a wand TBH. Husband's left foot, now that is a wand.

Wasn't Woods one of the ones waving his wand in Browny's home videos? Whether he can kick with it is another matter.

He'll work out fine at Barnsley as long as they play to his strengths.

He's mde for a central midfield role, orchestrating play. They should ensure they get the ball to him quickly & often.

He's a dead ball specialist.

He's certainly no replacement for Perkins ... replacing a live wire with faulty switch.

Joking aside. How much better is our starting 11 than theirs? Can't think of more than 1 or 2 that might get in our side.

Our squad is years ahead of theirs. Them signing Wood's proves it. I don't think i'd take anyone...maybe O'grady for the bench that's about it.

No he's not. How often has he proved that? I can't remember him scoring a single free kick for us despite hundreds of attempts. One penalty against Spurs more than evened out by his blazer into the Tyne against Newcastle, and an excellent pass/cross every now and then. "It's in Woods territory" became a laughable quote in the stands.

I agree somewhat with the rest of your post mind, he can be an asset when played correctly in a creative, ball-playing way but I fear the injuries have stamped out the best years of his career.

After seeing Woods against Stevenage the other week my thoughts were that you see better players in the Sunday leagues, Dickov did the right thing and got shut after that performance.

If it is, then I will defend myself by saying that many of our fans through the years have genuinely presented such bizarre opinions on Woods.
