Real Ale "outlets"
« on January 12, 2016, 06:48:56 pm by Donnywolf »
Good number of posts re the Best Beer so naturally with so many posts it led me to believe we could do favourite Bars Clubs and Pubs quite easily

Some of my favourites in no particular order :

Jemmy Hirst at The Rose and Crown Rawcliffe - . Simply a great place for the quality of the Beer. They are nearing their 3000th different Beer (Timothy Taylors Landlord is permanently "on") and keep a register on a Chalkboard showing what is on and what is up next .... AND Jane the Landlady has recently visited the Keepmoat for the first time v Stoke so you can talk Beer and Hoops

Imperial Club Mexborough - again a great place to drink Beer as they brew their own on the premises and they do it bloody well. They recently shared the prize for the top Brew as awarded by Donny Camra in the Specialist Ale Category 2015. I think it was for a Chocolate Stout ... and who stopped them winning the award outright I hope you are asking yourself ? Answer - themselves as they brewed a Raspberry Blonde (or Wheat Beer) which also scooped a share of the same Award .... Brilliant

Not so much a Pub more a day out. High and Low Bradfield (turn left at Owlerton Dog Track) where you can walk round Agden Reservoir or Dam Flask or if fit both. Then go uphill and visit The Old Horns Inn a Thwaites Pub (now brewed by Marstons) but which also serves Brews from Bradfield Brewery such as Farmers Blonde and Belgian Blue. The food there is amazing and the views incredible !

A short walk takes you to Bradfield Brewery and their Shop alone is well worth a visit with everything from Beer to Rugby Shirts Glasses Cards and Chutneys. Well worth a look ....

... as is The Nags Head which is a short drive away and serves as the Brewery Tap for Bradfield Brewery and as such does most of their range at really competitive prices and which does tremendous food as well...it is very popular with walkers and cycling clubs and there are usually loads outside when weather permits

In and around donny: mason's arms does about 4 real ales/home brew ciders that change relatively regularly, the marketyplace deli nexty door bdoes loads of bottled brews, glasshouse has a few on each week, black bull does two or three there's the cask corner and the doncaster micro brewery alehouse not far from each other and of course the different wetherspoons places - most are examples of popular 'mass produced' brands but you can find some rarer gems!

Eden Arms has Abbeydale Moonshine on pretty much permanently. If I'm in Sheffield I'll pop into Kelham Island (Fat Cat and Kelham Island Tavern) or the Sheffield Tap at the station which is a great place to sit outside on a sunny day and watch people going by.

Those 3 are all great shouts. A real good session would be a few in each !

KIT will be finding out if they are Pub of the Year for a third time in a few short years any time now !

Donny Brewery in town is great and just won 'Camra Pub Of The Year', also a big fan of the Martketplace Alehouse and my local the Eagle & Child.

Marketplace Alehouse has mostly stopped its "off" sales of bottles and now offers 5 cask and 4 or 5 keg beers, also they've just extended Fri & Sat opening to 11.30pm.

Don't think I've ever had a decent pint in Cask Corner, everything tastes a bit sour.

Donny Brewery has some good beers, but the surroundings could do with being made a bit more "homely" and the owner could do more to welcome non-real ale lovers.

In regards to the Donny Brewery, Ian and his wife run that place on their own, to have done what they have in such a short space of time is fantastic! The beer is great and they have done a lot to try and make the place more 'homely' but these things take time and I fully expect the Brewery to only get better and better as time goes on! The events they host their are brilliant too! They sell plenty of ciders in their for the Non Real ale folk too!

Agree with all that, but he needs to get rid of that chip he's got on his shoulder about lager drinkers - instead of making sarky comments, he should offer them a pint of a pale ale...or maybe even brew a lager!

Why when thats what his passion is and thats what he wants to brew? He has just started selling continental beers in bottles so chances are some of them will be lagers or more of a lager type ale than what he brews! He also has pale ales on as well quite regularly! If you want lager why go to an ale brewery in the 1st place??

Marketplace Alehouse, Flying Scotsman (the stout and the old ale are lovely), Leopard and the Corner Pin are my personnel favorites

Because many people walk in not knowing exactly what it is, or are with a group of friends who are real ale drinkers. Surely taking a more "inclusive" approach by offering an alternative when asked for lager might actually increase business and maybe convert a lager drinker to the proper stuff?

 :that:

Having a brand name Lager would be good in the same way as having Wine and Cider for those who prefer them is

Then it is possible as you say for the Lager drinkers to probably try some of the German / Belgian Lager styles or Doncaster Breweries Blonde style beer(s) - but only of course if they wanted. Some may choose not to.

Agree with comments on Cask Corner. We nearly go there on a town visit are ale drinkers but normally have a bottle in there.

We are off Kelham Island on Saturday so let's hope they are celebrating by giving some beer discounts.

Best place for as on the other thread is White Bear in Masham. Loads of choice, new Theakston's beers to try, decent food and Black Bull bitter.

DFP just published their list of Top 7 Town Centre Pubs

Salutation
Cask Corner
Corner Pin
Market Alehouse and Deli
Tut n Shive
The Plough
Flying Scotsman Tap

They are listed in order that I recalled them and I don't think they have picked them in order of merit

Found it to be one of the most unfriendly places I've ever drank in for non real ale drinkers. I find the whole real ale scene pretty sniffy anyway, the way they look down their noses at lager drinkers like they are drinking endless pint glasses of piss. It happens with just about every person who drinks real ale but you don't expect it from an establishment trying to get your custom.
By and large a good list by the DFP in terms of local pubs though. Corner Pin tops it for me in Donny. Always full of eclectic characters, a proper Jukebox and Dart Board and a full selection of drinks. It seems to be bucking the trend as its full most evenings I go in, long may that continue!

Interesting observat ion how often many pubs dint seem welcoming to non real ale customers.
I go out with a mate who loves his real ale and I prefer lagers. Often the lagers offered are poor.
At best it is an afterthought to provide decent lagers or good paler ales.

Perhaps you should start your own thread about Best Lager Outlets!  :)

Personally I think the vast majority of lagers do taste like piss i.e. Fosters, Carling, Carlsberg. I don't mind Peroni or Moretti but they are always outragiously priced!!

I like my real ales but I'm not totally anti-lager. If all that's on offer is something as disgusting as Worthington Creamflow or mass-produced Boddingtons from an electric pump, then I'd much rather have a pint of Stella, thanks.

Due to the public feedback DFP have added a second 7

http://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/news/doncaster-s-best-pubs-which-ones-are-your-favourites-1-7683006
Reading through the article I noticed the blue plaque above the window of The Masons, I can honestly say I have NEVER seen that before !?!? Who or what does it commemorate ?

I think it says that it is a Tetleys "heritage" pub, rather than a specific person

I was always under the impression it read,
"Muttley once got a round in here!"  ;)
Do they still have the bells/buzzers on the wall in what used to be the middle room?

For those who like Bradfield Blue, you can get it in bottle format at the Elsecar heritage centre.

Somehow I've managed to live in Donny for 34 years (honest!) and never been into the Corner Pin. I'll have to see what I can do about rectifying that ASAP. May need to book a half day Friday and sample a gallon in there.

You'd need to be patient at Eden Arms. No chanced of getting pi**ed there with the slow service.

I usually manage to get at least half way there on a Wednesday or Thursday evening!
